you gotta stick the kids on . not old Maurice and Mango and Ricky and CJ etc.

100% Lightening. Is it a case of the boomers clinging on. Its so weird actually. Most sportmen retire alot earlier than 60 odd. Older trainers is fine. Up to 80 years Im fine with. But driving different beast. Perhaps those you mentioned plus others should stick to training & get the young guns on.

Even leaders gripping on. Wont retire or stand down. Yet its pretty obvious the younger crew eg Cambridge team, push ahead with leaps & bounds. Look at ATC for eg & HRNZ.

I don't quite get the argument Karrots ... I would presume it's much easier to steer a horse on a cart than it is to ride them in races... so are you saying that all jockey's 40 plus should leave it to those younger too?   What about airline pilots, jets are pretty fast  ..   or taxi drivers in the big cities .. or rally drivers ..   I've seen a lot of harness drivers under 30 that shouldn't consider stepping in the cart again ..  and I'd much rather have Maurice or Tony in the sulky.     Everything is relative.. and young body over old head is not always that clear cut.

Hey lovely Dancing,

Popped back in before popping off again.

Nah def not 40 or 45 thats still ok age. Not sure exact age ish. The ones we are speaking of in this thread tho are this year respectively 68, 65, 63.

Now Im not following & to be honest lost interest in Harness just pop in to say hi to y"all. Can see it differently. Outside looking in.

Those ages driving speed machines in high stake races. Thats a big no for me. There is also higher risk health too over a younger person. Thats why health insurance goes up, the older we get.

We are all getting older. Its awful arrgh  Time for the young ones to shine.

Lucky Morrie Holmes and Cecil Devine didn't hang up their silks at 60 🙂

Both forced out at 65 with the compulsory retirement rule. (much to Cecil's Total frustration with keeping Lord Module racing)

There is nothing wrong with the 'old' boys driving their own horse if they feel like it . plenty of owner trainers around. Last December old 'Bob K' drove his trotter in the Interdominion trot final at the age of 82.  I don't think its the best idea . you're not as sharp as you once were by that age ? 😉

I think for Nz harness racing , getting the youngsters involved is VITAL for the industry , and if you have too many professional drivers , it would become like USA with the 'same' drivers (like Dexter and Todd mcCarthy from downunder)  going out in every race and just the same 12 or so Pro's all night.

Australia has defeated that happening by all the middle aged trainers jumping off the race driving ( except Alford) and letting the youngsters do the steering. Even in the wild west WA this is happening slowly but surely. Juniors have 'taken over' in NSW ,even winning the last 2 Interdominions .

So if drivers (who aren't training when they should be ) like Blair Orange and Tim Williams and Ricky May take a lot of the drives at All the meetings going. What is left for the young 'up and comers' ? bugger all that's any good. this will ultimately lead (already has IMO) to industry decline .

Those boys should be training and driving out of a stable  . Tim probably does help Telfers in training and Blair was associated with Barron for a while , but those horses didn't live up to expectations ,so Blair probably wants better drives,  but they do/did some trackwork in fairness to them I spose.

Just saying , it would be awful if 'fully pro' like USA without the youngsters getting a go. well done Aus avoiding this!  , in every State too.

Tragedy,  that was a draconian rule . I watched Morrie run his last race at Hutt Park on a Trotter called Transmitter Sound, and guess what . Yep it won. He was a magician , you could put him behind a 3 legged donkey and back it with confidence. Devine was a product of Australia, Tasmania. Came over here for an Interdom and never went back , much to NZ,s gain.

Mentioning another strong family is our own Williamson bunch. The boys, good trainers in their own right. Im sure the dynasty will keep going for some time yet.

Cecil Devine doing a big job in Nz with quite a few NZ cups. Got a ban in Tassie for pulling a rival off his horse by the leg in a saddle event. Cecil in a cart not wanting to get passed by i imagine  lol 😂 a funny story from my grand dad who used to race him there. Tassie had quite a few races in the war years and before with large fields of horses in saddle pacing and some in the gig, ALL in the same race. My dad won his first race 1944 when a 13 year old in a saddle pace as weighed next to nothing at that age. reckon you could squeeze through gaps better too 😆.

The Noble's there in Canterbury from Tassie too. won buckets of races in nz . George and John .  And their horse Stanley Rio from Tassie won the Nz Cup and the Interdominion as well with that great horse (repping for Nz by then) .

Cardigan Bay won his first purse in a saddle pace , 3rd I think. Bit of trivia.

That old boy could do anything . whata gem he was.

here's a photo at Elwick . Track surfaces were quite 'heavy' for a lot of years so may of suited those not dragging a cart through it a lot better at times.

Here's some Pacers combined  in one race at the post in one of my old photo's . think it was a great uncle winning on this occasion lol 😆 but we're all related in Tas anyway  😂

Question, how many Harness drivers full stop are there that complete 40+?

Not looking for explanations. Just facts.

Just looking at Addington tonight Karrots. can't answer the exact 40 + question but can look at the other end of the scale , where we were commenting on how the juniors need to get the drives to help them with motivation (and therefore harness racing future )

The news is good ! the South island Trainers really getting behind them and the Juniors won 7 of the 10 races tonight . (there weren't any in race 1 ) Professional reinsmen Blair and Tim won the other 2 races.

Carter D with 3 wins, Max Hill, Gemma T with 2, Jack harrington all in first place , and several more placings with the like of Wilson H, Sarah O , Sam Thornley and Kerryn T as well all near the money.

Think the future looks pretty bright  🌞 ! ! the youngsters proving more than capable of running with the oldies lol 😉

Thats fantastic the young guns are getting the job done! Well done to the owners & trainers supporting them.

Also Iv been given the tip Sweet Lous also getting the job done at Addington yesterday 4 of 10 races & a quick look a 2nd too from only 5 starters.

Apparently some Lous won also at Melton & West Australia yesterday too.

Wait looks like the lil Lous won both Group races at Ashburton too. Not sure how many starters total raceday there was but a quick glimpse was 3 or 4 starters. So 2 winners from say 4 starters.

And at Alex Skylou won 2nd time in a row. Looks like 4 starters that nite for a win, a 2nd, a 3rd.

Really showing up now.

Good call.

Doesnt change fact when we all get older our body starts to become like a used car, not a brand new one anymore.

Cautious to say this as sensitive subject & you always wish for the best.

In office & on field/track things have happened.
