So you are saying, this is a simple matter of poor tactics, in a race where he ran himself into the ground and hit the wall at the 200m, against a very good tough opponent.

A bit like going out too fast in a marathon, and hitting the wall

I'm not sure totally. He may be injured, but he definitely was under pressure from the 300-350. My opinion is he went about 400 metres to soon. He went like he wanted to hit the front at the 350, not the finishing line. Flemington is the kind of track that will find you out if you are not strong down that straight. Which gives further credit to the winner.

Is a vet check travelling 3 hours to get there standard procedure? Do you think a horse trained in Ruakaka would travel to Cambridge (past Auckland) to get a vet check?

the answer is YES..in fact, friends of mine have had horses floated from Ruakaka to Matamata for vet inspections if the case is urgent ..and i Catalyst's case they clearly wanted a post-race 'going over' that is comprehensive, and mebbe the best vet/s for certain aspects of physiology or whatever are at Ballarat.

OMG - it was an illustration. The times are similar depending on when you do it. In fact, if you do it at 10am in Australia, it would be likely to take you longer than the same trip in NZ. What the hell does the number of kms have to do with it. In both examples, you are having to go through or around the biggest city in the vicinity - and don't they have quality vets in Auckland or Melbourne. I give up.

im thinkin maybe there is some fancy equipment or specialist service i Bballarat that makes it the appropriate place to take the horse. It's a 'given' that there's nothing ourwardly wrong with him ..they kust want to leave no stone unturned in figuring out the disapponting finish

I'm thinking they realised the horse was carrying an injury.

His run wasn't that bad on Saturday. Just not up to it on the day.

Yep, I'd just reinforce this comment. As I've stated, I thought he was showing an injury, hence going to Ballarat.

Clearly means he was not up to it on the day. And his run wasn't that bad.

Certainly wouldn't sack him on that run, and wouldn't change gear based on it either.

I had a wry smile looking back at Clayton  Chipperfield's comment, that he would never race again without  blinkers, when the poor run turned out to be nothing that blinkers  could rectify

I see the know it all back posting and reading this site
