PWJ Posted November 5 Posted November 5 SEMI-FINALS - Saturday November 9 IF YOU NEED TO COVER SCRATCHINGS OR A POST MESS-UP PLEASE, PLEASE DO IT IN A NEW POST. DO NOT EDIT ORIGINAL POSTS ! Currently Fine and a Soft 7 at Riccarton and Partly Cloudy and a Good 4 at Flemington. Here we are at the Semi-Finals and we have 4 form teams looking to become Champions and another 4 sides hoping for some redemption in the form of a Presidents Cup. But to capture either of these prizes a win on Saturday is mandatory. No Jokers, no bonus points, no aggregates - it is just individual tussles in favour of your team that will get you there. Minor Premiership winners The Chiefs finished the Round Robins in grand style destroying a talented Magpie side 5-zip but now have to resist an ambitious Turbos outfit who in an act of sheer wizardry bundled their way into the Finals winning a Regular Joker encounter over The Swampies despite three of the Manawatu team finishing the day on zero dollars ! The Turbos have twice sought to bring down The Chiefs with a Joker play and failed on both occasions so they are nothing if not full of self-belief. Two of the 4 most serendipitous players in the comp - Steve P and Our Maizcay - will seek to cast a spell over each other while the top guns from each side with the best win record - Tom and Ziggy - also meet head-to-head. Lastly Gee will be hoping to avenge his Round 4 defeat by Ray when they meet again in this critical match. The other Championship Semi-Final features the Otago Highlanders and The Auckland Blues who have scored a win each in their two previous encounters this year. The Blues were hardly in sparkling form when they scraped home over the dismal Ferdies on Cup Day and now have to lift themselves to overcome a resurgent Highlanders crew who put paid to The Kauri Kats Finals hopes by 4-1 on Tuesday. Some classic HTH match-ups here including no less than the Howie vs old team mate Roland - both Magnificent Seven members - with each on 7 wins apiece and an overall score tally less than $42 in Auckland expat Howies favour. They last met in Round 6 when Roland triumphed in a match where they scored over $1000 between the pair. In Round 11 Pete defeated Rob in another $1000+ HTH and they do battle again here. I am also expecting some lively banter in the Moose vs Lightning Blue encounter with each registering a 7/7 win/loss record to date. The Presidents Cup is a curious rooster. Four teams believing they should be in the Championship Finals must lift themselves off the mat and salvage some personal pride showing everyone they CAN win something ! Avoiding the Final Day Wooden Spoon shootout is further motivation. The Kauri Kats went into Cup Day in 4th and had a collapse of never-seen-before proportions with just 3 wins scored by 2 competitors across the day and the other three scoreless all in the name of a Triple Joker play. But we know the Kats can bounce back to bite ya at any time and I am sure their opponents The Swamp Foxes will not underestimate them despite having recorded wins over The Kats in each of their previous encounters in this rendition of the comp. The serendipitous Anita goes HTH with the unfortunate Robert seeking to avenge a Round 9 defeat at Anitas hands, while in a somewhat mirrored tie the unfortunate Rex faces the serendipitous Punter Pete. The traditional Captains clash featuring Sharne and Black Caviar could also produce some fireworks. Lastly we have two sides who cannot believe how fortune has deserted them in recent times. The Magpies looked fairly comfortable to make the Finals heading into Tuesday only to have the most dismal day in their long history, five competitors registering just 4 wins between them all day and slumping to a catastrophic defeat by The Chiefs. Reigning Champions - The Ferdies - ended the Round Robin with the second highest aggregate but are incredulous to find themselves not only a long last but 13 points adrift of a Finals berth ! Both franchises need to pick their sorry asses up off the carpet and avoid an even more humiliating Wooden Spoon showdown next week. The Ferdies should be particularly concerned as The Pies are their bogey team in this comp having inflicted 1-4 and 0-5 defeats on the Naki crew so far. Taranaki pair Geoff and Maurice will be out to reverse Round 1 defeats by Ian and Richie respectively while PJ and Stevie N have very similar form lines, each with a 6/8 win/loss record and less than $55 difference in aggregate between them which promises a close tussle. We start Semi-Finals day with a couple of sprints down the Riccarton chute and then a restricted 1400 before the Metropolitan Trophy for NZ Cup aspirants then a quick dash to Melbourne for a similar event where the imported stayers outnumber the locals. We return to Christchurch for the 2000 Guineas which could be a very tactical affair with just 8 runners. We head back to Flemington for a capacity field of mature ladies in the Matriarch and round of the Semis with three WFA Gr1 contests loaded with star names. Good luck everyone ! Remember you must have at least 6 different picks (of 20) for those who post after their opponent Please post on time. Let's have some fun and note the closing time... Blues getting the staggers ? 🙂 after a very strong start to the comp. The perfect recipe for a very exciting finish to this semi. I scored well against Roland last time, but it still wasn't good enough. Therefore I'm more hopeful than confident in our match-up. Am I an optimist ? I sure am . . . after all, I've selected Hinged to win it's first race in 10,000 days ! 😉 Best of luck to my Highlanders team-mates. Let's give this a big shake ! Good luck too to Roland, Pete and the Blues. Outside of the Highlanders they're the team I support the most. Grand fields @ Flemington. Riccarton, well, not so much. So I'll plonk my chips there on Te Akau, and will hope that class prevails. Thanks for this excellent comp, PJ. Always superb entertainment each Saturday. Tuesdays, well, not so much ! Tuesdays don't produce enough winners, that's why Tuesdays are relegated to midweek rather than us finding Tuesdays on the weekend 😁. 5 1 Quote
Howard Atkinson Posted November 6 Posted November 6 Captain Craig, please can you replace any scratchings for me, as I'll be out early on Saturday. Last time from scratchings in 3 races you found 2 winners for me. Thank you for that. No pressure ! 😊 Quote
