Try this for the weekend: On the same afternoon a mare was placed in the Class 3 & 4 mile and paid $22.00 place (no, Roland didn't back it) under D.J. Withington. She was always at long odds ! This Foxton-trained mare was prepared by an owner-trainer. This mare was the roughest-bred horse of her time. Her sire was an unraced son of a Champion NZ stallion who stood in the Manawatu while the parentage of this mare's dam was completely blank ! This mare was tough, running 86 times and winning 6 including a stakes race at Trentham. She retired to stud as an 8yo and later produced a grey son who won a hurdle at Riccarton but not before capturing the handy treble of Southland Guineas, Greymouth Cup and Kumara Gold Nuggets ! At age 17 she dropped another colt who won two Masterton Cups and a Foxton Cup ! Not bad for a mare whose mum came from the wrong side of the tracks ! Anyone got his record Back in those days Alan there were no official ratings other than the Free Handicaps for 2yos & 3yos but I'm sure if there had been Copper Belt would have been one. That's a good guess NG but not correct. I remember Emphastan standing at the Curtis's Fairway Stud at Mountain Road, Inglewood. Fairway prince, a handy jumper, is the only one I can remember by him. An unraced son of Pakistan II and a half-brother to Sabaean colt Burgos who won the NZ Derby and later crossed the ditch to annex the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick. I can't recall where Cassidy stood but I do know he was nearly 20 years old when he was "banished" to WA where he got a Winterbottom Stakes victor and a Kalgoorlie Gold Cup winner. Won the Gloaming Stakes at Trentham beating Garfield and Willem Barendsz and placed 3rd behind Lavender Hill and Baccalla (another great Foxton mare) in the Cuddle Stakes. Grey Raider was her offspring by the grey stallion Jiggs Alarm who won the Southland Guineas, Greymouth Cup and Kumara Gold Nuggets treble.
