Round 1 - Saturday Jul 4

Race 10 - Doomben R9

Scr: 8,12-15,17

1 BARBARIANS

$605.00

0 points

4 TURBOS

$745.20

3 points

Neither of the Babas hopes yelped in the last where the only competitor to select the winner was Blind Squirrel so the Turbos scored a nice win to kick off the comp adding a bonus point for the 4-1 margin. Steve P pipped Gary and Barbarians' MVP Mardy for Man of the Match honours.

252.00 Mardy

184.00 Blind Squirrel

55.00 Pam

252.00 Gary

74.00 Richie

2 BLUES

$585.40

0 points

3 CRUSADERS*

$751.00

2 (x 2 Joker play) = 4 points

River Racer never got into it for The Blues so the Crusaders held on to win and double their points haul with a "cheeky" Joker play. Only Geoff tipped the final winner adding the quinella. Rob with 3 winners in NZ from the first 4 races and nothing after was Man of the Match while Captain Howie was MVP for the Blues. No bonus points were scored.

89.00 Gordy

0.00 Rex

0.00 Roland

108.00 Robert

3 CHIEFS*

$1979.00

3 (x 2 Joker play) = 6 points

2 KAURI KATS

$1468.00

1 point

The Kats big hope Love You Lucy ran on late into 4th but couldn't get near the winner so the Chiefs held on in an action-fuelled contest with both sides earning a point for a team profit and The Chiefs doubling their tally with a bold Joker play. Sharne, Ian and Punter Pete all landed BBs in the last. Captain Max was Man of the Match with a big score while Jack was MVP for the winners with only two collects.

693.80 Max

370.80 Ian

308.00 Rocky

1 FERDIES

$508.20

0 points

4 HURRICANES

$935.20

3 points

Jadentom only plugged and the plunge on Pennino mean't it was never paying enough so the 'Canes proved victorious adding a bonus point in the last with a 4-1 margin thanks to TC nailing Ashoka and John bagging a BB to overhaul Maurice despite Zac also landing a BB to claim Hesi. PJ (with a BB) and Heather also scored for The 'Naki in the last. Porky was Man of the Match with just one collect while PJ was a very modest MVP for the off-form Ferdies who can only improve from here.

Well done, Craig and the Crusaders on a solid Joker play success today against us 'Mighty Blues'.
Getting Joker play points is critical in this short comp ...so you've done well. The best of luck for the rest of the game.
I'm sure there's much better to come from us 'Mighty Blues' .... and next Saturday will be a very good place to start.
Let the fight-back begin.
Thanks, PJ.

really? 6pts from a Joker play may prove to be not enough in this short Comp...

mmmmm ....I'm thinking 6 pts is a pretty good haul. I don't think we'll be seeing many Joker plays that are more successful than that.

Thanks Virgil

I may have underestimated the Kats placing them 8th in John’s pick the finishing order I think 7th is a far more accurate prediction

Nice start for the Hurricanes seeing off the dangerous Ferdies

Dangerous ?? We were like old cows on our way to the works today !

Those 6 points were decided by the Captains of each team one picked for Rocky the other picked for punter Pete

Nearly $1500 for the Kats 1 point congrats

cheers mate.. and hearty congrats to you and your team on a fine win today ...

Pete's own picks (posted just a few minutes too late) would have produced $89.00 (cf $430 !)
so you did a great job on his behalf. Some great winners in there on a difficult day! Take the points and bank 'em! It was a tremendous match that went to the wire. Well done!

Sensational match, we can both count ourselves a little unlucky, we were unlucky not to take all 10 points, and you guys/gals were unlucky not to win, all the best over the next 6 rounds

Blues next week fellas, that'll be a walkover

There's a school of thought that the Hurricanes are more attuned to mid-summer than mid-winter racing, Hesi.

With that in mind I think you'll finf the 'Mighty Blues' going into next Saturday's match-up with a fair degree of confidence..

Plus ..... plus ............Geoff loves South Island racing. 😊

Plus .... plus ......plus ....... Mighty Blues on home turf Ellerslie.
Could life get any better ? 👍

Yep I'm with you Howie.

I reckon if you offered each skipper 6 points from their Joker play, most of them would jump at it.

well, of course you are 'with' Howie, as long as it makes you 'not with' the poor Kitty Kats. (It's alright KKs, we did OK today). We'll take our Consolation Point, knowing that in a short Comp like this, one needs to play the Joker to MAXIMUM EFFECT. Two Joker down and only a 6pter and a 4pter.

We might wait for the HairyCanes, who seem to be struggling to pick winter winners, not enough $3.00 shots coming home .. you.see, VvD, if you if you want to win this Comp you'll need some Team Profit Points as well as a Maximum Effect Joker. At your next team conflababullation, try to agree on something paying over $4.50.

LOL

I think teams are very even

Any team can beat any team........................

So I think the Chiefs getting 6 points today is a big advantage.

surely one team in 8 is capable of getting 8 or 10pts from the Joker play. Team profit points (and higher aggregates) are very important, too, when there are no playoffs to qualify for.

My call on this is that with the evenness of teams there will be more Joker play losses than Joker play wins.
So anyone underway with 6 points in a 7-round comp has left the gates with a wing on every hoof.

Nice aggregates for the Chiefs and Kats - well done!

I don't normally put too much stock in aggregates, but in a 7 round sprint with no play-offs, bonus points take on greater significance and a high team aggregate could effectively be worth an extra half a point if a tie needs to be split to determine the comp winner.

Speaking of no play-offs - Hesi that means you can't do what you did with JG - cruise through the round robin without winning (much) and then come good in the play-offs.  Discussion item #2 on the team meeting agenda 😋

Oops, better activate Plan B

I just think teams are to close to expect a 10 pointer Maximus
