Just recapping, there will be an announcement today at 3pm  on whether the lockdown will be extended.

If they had any intelligence, they would announce the decision at 1pm (as they will already know it now). And stop wasting people's (community/them/journos) time by having to gather for another discussion. If they don't do it then, that just reinforces the types of people you are dealing with. (I'm breaking my own rules - bloody politics!)

Horse racing in the UK was suspended from March 25th to June 1st 2020.

We resumed with no vaccines and no crowds at all and hugely stringent bio-containment and bio-security measures imposed.

The original thought was to re-start on a small number of tracks close to training centres to reduce travelling. That would mean, to paraphrase the League of Gentlemen "local racing for local people".

Could that not be a way forward for NZ - concentrate on three or four tracks (including the synthetics) and stage a meeting a day to keep things going until restrictions are eased?

One would hope there has been a lot of lobbying behind the scenes from NZTR, who run thoroughbred racing in NZ, considering the Racing Minister Grant Roberstson is also the Deputy Prime Minister and the Finance Minister, and the one who okayed the 70 odd million bailout of the NZ TAB last year to prevent it from defaulting on loans

They were obliged to proceed on the basis that there might be racing, as the decision to extend/not extend Level 4 was being made on Friday at 3pm

A move to Level 3 in the rest of the country outside Auckland, would have meant closed door meetings on the Sat were permitted(I think that is right)

MEETING NEWS

Withdrawal morning - Waikato RC, Manawatu RC & Matamata RC

If you can withdraw online, please do so.  Given the current circumstances, you can also withdraw via email through the nrb@nztr.co.nz address.

We are trying to reduce phone calls as the NRB staff are working under restricted conditions at the moment, whilst still fielding hundreds of calls.  If your only method to withdraw is via the 0508 Racing number, please be patient.  The NRB staff will clear your message if you cannot get through.

Under the current working conditions, the Bureau staff will take longer to prepare the fields.  There are several horses double nominated at both Waikato and Matamata so those fields will take some time.  Your patience and understanding is appreciated.

It is the intention of NZTR to proceed with these race meetings under Level 3 restrictions.

Decision on Friday afternoon Peter, as to whether the rest of the country outside Auckland drops to Level 3, and closed door meetings can proceed.

Remember when they announce, it is usually with a lag period, so question mark over whether NZ meetings on Sat will proceed

So maybe best to include 5 Te Rapa races, with 5 Aus spares

I think it's about a 50/50 at the moment.

Interestingly the police have set roadblocks up to stop Aucklanders heading to Northland. Their reasoning was because there could be an alert level change coming up on Friday. You can probably infer from that that they've been told something the rest of us haven't.
