Maximus
Time-honoured, iconic race etc etc ... 22 of the 27 still in the noms are Rating 79 or less; the highest rating horse is a R85. These plodders, I mean progressive stayers, are racing for $300k. On its way out as a black type race" MM
Freda
There is also a R 82 2500 hcp on the card. Go figure. The programme setters don't seem to be up with the play.
Hesi
That race has been on the card for a while now

Turny
Will be a disaster if NZ Cup downgraded .... but looking inevitable ... very sad for CJC
RJB
100% will get downgraded and very soon...agree with Freda re the other race we dont have enough for one decent field for a staying race let alone two...hard to believe a rating 58 horse is in the NZ Cup oh how far this once great race has fallen... Hesi
Okay, the quality of our cup horses is not wonderful, but the question has to be asked as to why there are so many absentees. Look through the last Auckland and Wellington Cups, quite a few well rated horses not there. You would expect the Derby to be a source of up and coming stayers, but no go there. 2 previous 3200m well performed cup horses are instead racing at Awapuni tomorrow. A couple of up and coming stayers in Aljay and Finest Wine, that have come up through the rating ranks, but that is about it, a number of journeyman stayers, that it would be no surprise to see win The stake money at $300K is good. Winning a NZ Cup still carries a lot of status for owners, tradition and all that, even though it is only G3. So why is the race avoided nowadays by many. Maximus
biggest surprise to me is that no Oz trainers have targeted it for a quick kill'. Any number of Vic/NSW stayers would be competitive
Hesi
Could they build a circuit around Cup Week. Obviously you can't play around with the 3 day carnival at Riccarton, supplemented by the harness meetings, but prior to that you have a War Decree Stakes meeting at Riccarton 2 weeks earlier, with Wingatui in between on MC day. Develop some more feature races with good stake money, that get connections thinking long and hard about campaigning in the South Island for a 4 Sat, 3 week circuit. Have noted that these chat sites are notorious for negative hand wringing, almost as though they want to see racing fail to justify their own opinion, which is pretty anal JMHO hahahaha

Won't make a comment, would rather just believe everything they are told and believe everything is just fine about racing. At least the people who you say are negative would like things to be better. Is it being negative to say the announcement after the postponement by the power brokers is a waste of time when they have already supposedly addressed this issue? Cup Week reflected the racing industry to a tee in my opinion. Drug cheats. Mismanagement. Hypocrisy. Inappropriate behaviour. Inconsistent stewards. Favouritism. Inappropriate leadership. Great racing. But that is being negative, isn't it. Can't have that, people don't like it because they can't think for themselves. The sand is deep in racing.
