  1. I thought we would be waiting a long time to see another horse as good as Lazarus

    I now think I'm wrong

You can bag me in 24 months time but I think Akuta will be every bit as good as Lazarus

    Mikie

  2. Here you go!

This should suit a couple of knowledgeable postes

Come in Double R, Gammalite ...... Karrots???!!

Pick 6 winners (if more than 1 correct entry, prize is shared)

Pick the winners of these 6 races

Winner gets $600 a win on his/her pick on the NZ Derby on 02.12.22 (Fixed Odds bet in advance is okj)

    The 6 races:

    Northern Oaks 25.03.22

    Northern Derby 25.03.22

    The Race 14.04.22

    Auckland Cup 27.05.22

    Rowe Cup 27.05.22

    New Zealand Cup 08.11.22

    Entries close on 20.01.22

Only other rule is you can't have the same picks as some other poster has posted, so it's first in, best dressed

It's not impossible if there's a couple of dominant horses around, but I think I'm pretty safe!

  3. Just thinking

With the changes in horse's birthdays will we ever see a modern day 3yo contest a NZ Cup?

Before thinking that Mike's gone mad just remember that with the new birthdays that Il Vicolo, Mainland Banner and Lazarus would have been called 3yo's when they won their Cups

Lazarus in particular wasn't actually even 4yo in real terms the day he won his 1st Cup (he was foaled on 12/11 and his 1st Cup win would have been a few days before the 12th)

    Unlikely I know

1 thing do agree with Guerin tho, that he said on Boxseat, is that if some peeps that are often negative about everything anyway, - so in a general negative person. Anyway if they have a moan about - The Race - oppose being excited about it, then perhaps its time they weren't in the industry.

After all he mentioned its not costing them nor the industry anything as

Slot holders pay the bulk $750k & the host has topped it up $150k = $900k.

Agree, at least they are trying something

The $150k that the Club is topping up is significant as there is no way that betting revenue will come anywhere near that cost

So I can only assume that the publicity and rub-off effect is what they are aiming at

The Club's CEO is very good financially, with a working background in harness, so I'm sure that he has done the numbers

I do worry about a possible dominance of a superstar

For example when Lazarus was here at his peak how would you feel about having paid $75k a year or 2 previous to "enter" another horse?

I am not sure Mike. One way or the other the trainer and driver will want their percentage.

    OK DR, I'm sure

    The slotholder gets the $

Split with the Owner if on a deal

Of course the Fees have to be paid

But Karrots was off beam thinking that $65k less fees was somehow less than $37500 if you reread her post

Regardless whether the 4th Stake is $65k or 75k, the owner/s are going to drop $10k, having to payout the trainer, and driving percentages.

Isn't it the slot holder DR, not the Owners (unless on a deal)

Haha, just trying to figure this out, @Mike is pretty good at Math but as you say, 10% owners have to pay out for trainer/driver fee. So 4th is not the finishing spot you want right?

As while the sponsor gets majority of their cash back ($65k out of $75k put up), but then, the owners then need to pay out 10% of $65k for 4th oppose 10% of $37,500k which is 5th-10th.

Is that right? So owners are worst off for running 4th over last? Surely not …

    No, it's not right Karrots

I don't think you grasp who gets the $ from a slot race

It isn't the Owner unless they are also the slot holder, or unless they have done a deal with the slot holder

I'll explain further and better later if you can't figure it out, just a bit busy atm

$1.20 in Aus too Karrots for Nicolas Cage .People must love your tips Karrots !!  Andy Neal has been going a fair while. He owns the 3rd horse in that race himself named Claude.

An Interesting story for you is his dad used to have a property at the Top of the South Island so Andy started off in that area. Near Blenheim somewhere he was training in the 80's and a huge flood happened in Marlborough around the 10th July 1983 and somewhere around 12 of Andys horses were lost drowned as they tangled in fences trying to escape the fast rising flood that roared through .The horse photos were very disturbing at the time . I was very shocked so can only imagine the Trauma that Andy went through .  I met Andy later that year in Auckland and was quite taken back by the images and the experience he suffered that Winter. Can only ever wish him good luck after that natural disaster that flooded whole towns and killed thousands of livestock 1983 . This furry guy got on a factory roof ,so in all likelihood made it through. quite an extreme event.

    DSC02577.JPG

Andrew's parents (Peter and Jean) had moved from Rai Valley to the Tua Marina area before the flood

I don't remember 12 horses not surviving, I thought it was much less than that, but it was 48 years ago so perhaps my memory is clouded (If Andrew says it was 12, then it was 12)

I do remember a few swam away, in the opposite direction, from being rescued and were found a couple of days later on what could loosely be described as an Island

A number were towed out behind small boats, which was quite tricky with outboard motors, and since the roads and fences were all under raging waters we had to take a stab at where the roads were so that we could navigate around the fences

I was a lot younger and fitter then and remember being given 3  days off work to be allowed to don a wetsuit and go help

Andrew and Lyn later relocated to Wrekin area in Fairhall, Marlborough before moving up North and enjoying success (such as the Auckland Cup with Flight South)

Andrew's father was a very popular member of the local racing community who sadly passed away during a harness trial or workout at Blenheim. Andrew's mothers cooking was a feature of Trials days back then

Andrew (don't think I've heard him called Andy that much) was a very good blacksmith in Blenheim before going on to much better things as a trainer and businessman in the Waikato

Andrew was also an exceptional judge of a next up winner, one being "Friendly Lord" who ran last on the 1st day at Blenheim for Bruce Graham (there were 2 Bruce Grahams) and then won the 2nd day at $70 odd after Andrew tipped it

Andrew & Lyn were certainly too good a trainers to stay in Blenheim!

  9. I was pretty sure that Robert knew that I was Mike O'Brien, but hey, happy to be an unknown!

Now that you have pointed a few things out I realise my question was a bit obtuse

There were no 2yo races involved but I accept that my query is a bit too vague

I'll come up with a better quiz with famous horses when I get some time free

    Mike

  10. I'll rephrase the question as I'm not sure if the Confederate Girl answer pertained to my question (and I'm sure I didn't race that horse)

Since you are so good at quizzes Robert I have one for you

Off the top of my head

What filly did I own and train In New Zealand that won 2 maidens without a dead heat being involved?

    Who, where and how?

That should keep you busy for a hour I'd think!

If they do it in fine Allstars type of fashion . they would use Spirit to cart KOS up from the back immeadiately they settle down after the first bend, and No 1 would hand up to KOS.

This gives the McCarthy barn the first 3 running spots along the fence. and control from the death-seat too.

If KOS does the unthinkable and is out of 'gas' in the home straight. drifts out under pressure. Expensive Ego and AltaOrlando  drive through inside and it's still a BIG chance of the 1 - 2 -3 McCarthy finish . !!!!!!!!!!  there you go . lol......

    We will see

I can't see #1 handing as that would concede the win I would have thought, and surely the Driver and Owners of EE are after the win themselves

    But time will tell

Correct Mike, he only had one start at Trentham.

He won his first five wins on grass.

Sorry Robert, but I don't think you are correct

Back then Taranaki (New Plymouth) was an all weather Track

So the only win that Yulestar had on grass in his 1st 5 wins would have been at Hawera

I haven't researched it but since I drove a winner on one of the days at New Plymouth I'm pretty confident that I'm right!

Thank you for your consideration/explanation. I was mainly grumpy because a nice lady 'Maria' is gone now from posting because strayed on to the dreaded 'covid thread' and some 'demographic humour' was directed at her. So she is gone. I don't post 'you lot' type of comments about anyone at all,  as would lose their respect . e.g wouldn't post about sheep shagging as even though some find it Hilarious, a big chunk of people (like myself) find it offensive. just so unnecessary.

Any way ,moving on from the Ashes , I see you have plotted a course for the McCarthy stable to take in the Interdominion Grand Final this week on the Interdominion 2021 thread. Be interesting to see how accurate you are. I'll jump on that thread with a opinion.

    No worries LB

I don't mind if you call me a sheep shagger even though you must admit it's a worse insult than being called a Pavlova stealer!

I don't read the Covid thread sorry, I've had enough of Covid obsessed types on other threads hijacking things without purposely reading about it!

I have to go overseas to see family in March and trying to arrange that is a nightmare, Singapore Air make you have a Covid test within 48 hours of flying (no earlier) and have a result, yet results here in Blenheim take 72 hours

    Work that out

I think Yulestar fell in one of his races at Trentham.

Peter Jones started driving him from the 2001 N.Z. Cup onwards, and won twice, from 12 drives on him. It may have been at the time that Tony had his accident.

You are right Robert, he did fall at Trentham but I don't think it was in one of his races there

I stand to be corrected but I think Yulstar only started at Trentham once, that being the day he fell

    I was there too

G'day Mike , for some reason you decided to start a thread here commenting on something Gammalite said on another Forum . Instead of responding there,  you are here where no one knows what the 'Fark me you steal' (A nice Mike quote) you are on about. How Trivial can you get ?.

Your little phrase here is quite insulting to more than just myself ? . Why ? What good does it do seriously? trying to belittle others ?

To Just chat about the Interdominion just not on your agenda ? Thank you for your fine up-date about the location Yulestar is/ was trained at times.

But no thank -you for the Insults . Hope you have a nice day still . ( Note to self don't eat too much Pavlova)

    Really Lightning?

You consider that an insult? A common phrase about Pavlova?

I thought that it was my comment was pretty trivial

However I'll note that you have a different sense of humour to me and endeavour to not upset you again

As far as posting on another site goes no thanks

Join in on the INTERDOMINION 2021 thread here then on the Race Place. You and Ludwig worrying about Gammalite not recognising a great TARANAKIAN trained horse (on another site)is a bit trivial .

Would be like worrying about whether LIGHTNING BLUE is a Victorian or a New Zealand horse?????. who cares. or is that MY LIGHTNING BLUE lol ?

Plenty of Great Reminiscing !!! on the INTERDOMINION 2021 thread here Mike . (Heads up for you in todays quiz later on I'll be asking about great horses that have clean swept the series after Luke looks like doing it this year.) even the last Three Auckland Interdominions have achieved that remarkable feat.

    Trivial?

Fark me, you lot steal Pavlova too

I wasn't making a huge fuss, merely pointing out that Yulestar wasn't an Auckland horse

Was Wally Lewis a great NSW player?

    Mike

  18. I was at New Plymouth when Yulestar began his racing career

From memory he ran 4th the 1st day with Colin Butler driving, and won the 2nd day

I remember this meeting well as I ran an inglorious last on my horse More Excuses on the 1st day, and won the 2nd day paying $40

The next Taranaki meeting was only a month later and Yulestar won both days with Tony Herlihy driving

Tony didn't go down for a Wellington meeting I think and Maurice Mckendry had 2 misses on Yulestar

Tony Shaw then took the reins and won 3 in a row, the 1st 2 in the CD and then 1 at Alexandra Park

I think Yulestar won his first 4 races at Taranaki

    I'm getting old, I'm reminiscing

  19. 'and did see YULESTAR win for Nz in Brisbane. very good win for the Auckland horse"....Gammalite

Pretty clear Gammalite wasn't referring to where Yulesatr had been driven

Reference seems to be where he was trained

I don't want him to come from anywhere Lightning

But he was trained at Hawera
