Royal Nod
First of all congrats to the club for decent stakes and putting on a few mile races, I enjoy them. Have to take them to task however over the conditions of the non winners trot race where winners were allowed in but with a 30m handicap. That is silly to me. Some of those winners were rating 40 and wouldn't be competitive with a 30m head start let alone a handicap. The rating system is designed to match horses up to be competitive with each other. It can work quite well if used properly It seems some programmers are determined to try and turn the rating system back into the old class system.

How they decide on 30m would be worth knowing. Luckily the field was smallish with lots of breakers which gave them a chance but it is a long way to travel for a back mark like that.
karrotsishere
Yes checking results & Karrots liked this too. Lou had 4 starters for 2 winners. Also from selections game out of 10 races played - Karrots picked 7 winners. (Re trot - when saw that & looked at ratings for horses off 30m was surprised to see low R40s. Therefore instantly made 2 selections of horses from front row).
Addington
Yesterday's Nelson meeting was not at all popular with Ozzie punters One Ellerslie race was close to doing more on the win pool at Tabcorp than the whole Richmond win pool card. i enjoyed the mile racing and hope they continue with it in the future although it might be a good idea to calibrate the distance. Some of the times for lower grade horses looked suspect

Compare that with Tegan Banner an aged horse who on its 14th start won in 1.524 or Celtic Spirit wining in 1.531. Either the distance may be wrong, the track is fastest in NZ or they are horses who will win them on their ear from here on in if they run those times elsewhere despite higher ratings.

It is probably just a fast track. Nelson is pretty warm and they scoot along there. When you look at times in the USA, average nags run 1.53 etc.
