Likely Fields - Rupert Clarke Stakes Day

Travis Noonan

Group 1 racing heads back to Caulfield on Saturday with the running of the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes under Handicap conditions over 1400 metres.

This year’s edition is an intriguing one with the main chances in early betting, Begood Toya Mother and Age Of Chivalry, down low in the weights and on the cusp of making the final field of 16. Lindsay Park, Lindsey Smith and Godolphin will all be represented in the feature, with likely two runners each at least.

This is how the likely field is shaping up:

The other feature of the day at Caulfield is the race with the golden ticket into the Stella Artois Caulfield Cup. This year’s running will be a strong one, with many horses vying for the win that makes you ballot exempt for the 2400m feature. Lindsay Park hold the key with possibly more than five runners in the 2000m event. Key suspensions to Damien Oliver and Jye McNeil have meant replacement of riders for likely favourites Steel Prince and Sikandarabad.

The good racing continues up the Hume Highway as well with the running of the George Main Stakes and The Shorts with both races to prove key pointers to some of the biggest races in the country. The George Main Stakes will be D-Day for many this preparation with Chris Waller needing Verry Elleegant to fire and James Cummings hoping Avilius can win and get his spring back on track after two defeats at short odds. The race is full of depth with 7 of the 9 runners Group 1 winners and no doubt the race will have a big impact on the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate markets.

The Shorts is another mini Everest and sees the best sprinters clash yet again. Expect Santa Ana Lane to need the hit out as he usually doesn’t run as well first up as he does deeper in the preparation. Expect Redzel to be the favourite when All-in markets are released on Monday on the back of that fast time win in the Concorde two weeks ago. Classique Legend is the most interesting runner as it will be his first test against good sprinters at open age.
