Click here NZTR announces $20.3 million dollar stakes increase NZTR has announced its funding for the 2023-24 racing season. The recent approval of the TAB NZ Entain strategic partnership has allowed NZTR to plan with certainty for the next five years and prioritise areas of the business to promote growth. The document that follows outlines in comprehensive detail key areas of funding for the upcoming season. At the top of this priority list is the enhancement to stakes funding. NZTR is thrilled to announce that stakes funding will increase by $20.3 million, taking our total stakes funding to $90.8 million for next season. As you will see from the information published in the document, this is spread across all categories and regions of racing. Further, it includes the introduction of eight new innovation races to the calendar, as well as further funding to the very successful Southern Mile. While we appreciate that stakes increases are hugely significant to the rejuvenation of this industry, NZTR Board and Management have also outlined key strategic priorities to be addressed over the next 12 to 36 months. These priorities identified by NZTR will continue to relentlessly improve the presentation and preparation of all facets of our industry which is paramount to improving wagering growth and will be maintained in key areas such as: Industry training and enhancing the welfare of our people and horses Enhancing track/surface performance for better racing outcomes Ensuring accountability for performance among clubs Achieving sustainable revenue growth Enhancing public relations to improve the image and reputation of the industry Also included is an explanation of the recent TAB NZ Entain strategic partnership and what it means to our industry, as well as answering a number of frequently asked questions surrounding the agreement. Today is the dawn of a new era for New Zealand’s Thoroughbred racing industry. We are committed and resolute to the fact that from this point forward, each and every one of us need to adopt a mentality of improved professionalism and standards across every part of the industry. We will only maximise this once-in-a-generation opportunity if we all understand that the way forward is to work together for the greater good of the industry. As we move forward, NZTR asks its participants to think of the legacy they want to leave for generations to come. This is our opportunity to lay the platform of improved professionalism and standards across the industry, licence holders, clubs, wagering partners and governance. We are all required to step up and put our best foot forward to regain the pride in this great industry that was held decades before us.

    BYO

🍺 BYO is back at the races Kiwis will soon be able to bring a drink to the races after a Bill to protect this Kiwi tradition passed its third reading in Parliament last night, National MP for Rangitīkei Ian McKelvie says. “Race meetings are important community events, primarily run by volunteer committees. However, in recent years, race attendance has declined, particularly at smaller regional clubs. “Many of these clubs lack the resources to offer significant hospitality services, so allowing patrons to bring their own is an integral part of getting people through the gates. “The Sale and Supply of Alcohol (Exemption for Race Meetings) Amendment Bill, which passed its third reading last night, will mean race-goers and punters can take a bottle of wine or beer to the races at clubs with three or fewer meetings in a calendar year. “This is significant for the racing community, which needs support from government to continue breeding world-class horses, along with hosting meets that are part of New Zealand’s DNA. “This law will help preserve the Kiwi tradition of enjoying a family picnic in the back of the car and having a great day out. “Rural clubs in particular will benefit from this change in law, and it is certain to encourage more people to re-engage with the industry and help to keep our regional clubs going. “I am grateful to my colleagues in Parliament who voted in favour of this legislation and to the racing community for their engagement and support. “This is a small change to our licensing laws but is one that many across New Zealand will enjoy for years to come.”
  6. I agree. Be interesting to see what their new platform looks like. More money wasted on the current TAB platform. I loved the phrase 'more generosities'. Do bookies even know the meaning of the word?

    Rule change

The trials commentators will be ecstatic.

    Rule change

At the beginning of the 2022-23 racing season, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing announced a proposed amendment to the Rules of Racing, around the naming of horses before being allowed to trial or presented for barrier certification. NZTR has approved the Rule change whereby a horse may only be entered for, and start in, a race, or a trial (or a jump-out or test for certification purposes) if it is registered and has been named in accordance with the Rules of Racing. Why has NZTR approved this Rule change? The rationale behind this Rule change is to better align with regulations currently upheld in Australia. Naming your horse before a race, trial or test for certification purposes will ensure there is no delay or refusal of nomination. IT will also provide improved financial accounting. Accounts will be sent directly to the owner, rather than to the trainer as is the case with unnamed horses at present. The new Rule change provides improved punter visibility of horses. It will also aid traceability for welfare purposes, tracking the current location and ownership of horses more efficiently. The migration to the Single National System (SNS) means that unnamed horses will not be accepted when taking nominations for trials. This is a default of the system and cannot be changed. How will the Rule change impact me? NZTR’s IT system has been updated so that unnamed horses cannot be nominated through the National Racing Bureau and the Trainer’s Service Centre from 1 August 2023. Unnamed horses are still able to enter jump-outs but only if they are not undergoing a test for certification purposes. Previously there have been concerns expressed regarding possible GST implications. However, NZTR has received advice that GST does not become payable until the horse participates in a race. Naming horses before they trial will therefore have no effect on the time that GST becomes payable. We thank you for your compliance with this Rule change which we believe will provide substantial benefits and professionalism in our industry.
