  2. Ryan Fox shocker. He had the Irish Open in the bag but fluffed the last two holes. Now I am only a once a year golfer but I would be disappointed if I couldn't get a 100 yard chip at least 10 feet from the hole. Fox barely got it on the green. That must have cost him $400k being difference 2nd to 3rd.

  3. The TV coverage maybe superior especially if the maze of dividends don't cover the horses however the information presented to the punter is a disgrace. For example when it comes to first starters all the public gets is how good the trainer stats are and perhaps a look at the breeding and oh yes they love to tell you if cheek pieces have been added. Yet it surprizes me that often the bookies get it right so they must have a network of sources. Its probably the same everywhere.. racing needs a major shake up with regard entertainment and information.

Whats contained in the article is scary enough & hardly surprises me.

I think Mardigras is right, its time to wind up the industry here, its not even close to self sustainable, I don't know of any other industry that gets the assistance with not much accountability that racing does & most of it is built on a bullshit lie about how many it employs & how much it earns the country.

Its grossly over stated & a decent proportion of it would continue albeit possibly in another form if the industry were to close.

Many things wrong about the industry I agree. The club committee system an example where the local  lawyers, professionals, biz owners without the slightest knowledge of racing would get on. All of it based on the "mates" system prevailing to this day. When was the last time someone from TAB or NZTR would contribute something to racing blogs. Takes an effort to get outside ones own bubble which the Wellington hangers-on aren't capable of doing.

Worth remembering Brian de Lore staked his reputation on Messara and the outsourcing of the TAB.

His article however leaves out so many other dodgy factors. The whole process shrouded in secrecy, the blatant efforts to influence the minister e.g. Michael Guerin's TAB articles, the list is quite long. The Auditor General's view will be interesting.

Entain have done the decent thing and agreed to a 2 year moratorium on staff redundancies, but after that there will be major streamlining of the operation in NZ, which was always the issue, excessive costs

Believe it or not there are probably one or two TAB staff Entain may want to keep. However its highly unlikely they will have the other staff twiddling their thumbs for 2 years. I can see them working on other Entain overseas brands which are illegal in NZ or geo blocked.

Colonistion  caused all the problems,  yet they wear  colonial  made shirts, shoes and  drive colonial  cars.

The current Foreign Affairs minister is the most pro colonial mouthpiece of all time. Any command for a statement from UK or USA is immediately actioned.

Why don't you do us all a favour and read the legislation. The TAB does not pay any tax except for GST as a tax collector. Do you think other business should be allowed to conduct business and be exempt from paying GST?

No Income tax. It seems that apart from not paying income tax, you think the racing industry should also be exempt GST. Delusional.

The NZ Racing industry is a beneficiary. Much like a person receiving the unemployment benefit. Except, even the recipient of the unemployment benefit, has to pay tax on that benefit.

You are showing you have no understanding of how the TAB operates and how the industry is funded.

    Rubbish,

OK Winston Peters did away with the betting levy which is only now being realized. But to pay income tax on the amount deducted from bets would mean no gambling enterprise would be viable. I have no idea where you are coming from. If racing had to pay that tax then they could claim the cost that owners spend on training and selling the rights to use their product. In fact the income would always be in negative territory as the owners would charge a significant amount nowhere near covered by prize money.

Before you go off spouting your "superior knowledge" do some thinking.

By who? The TAB distribution has not been taxed, the TAB does not pay income tax. GST comes off before you get to a net revenue. That net revenue does not have tax deducted - it becomes the basis for the money handed out to the racing industry - without any standard income tax or any other taxes.

And even if the TAB paid income tax, it doesn't change the situation where whatever is given to the Racing industry, is a government handout - as it is all government money to begin with.

The money that the Act earns is money that is earned by the government, not the Racing industry. You seem to fail to grasp this. And that money is then handed out freely to the racing industry - tax free.

Every bet is taxed. From wikipedia... although I'm not sure how the fixed odds betting is treated.

The TAB offers a wide range of totalisator and fixed-odds betting products. Just over 80 percent of the totalisator betting dollar is returned to the customer. The rest is returned to the racing and sporting codes, after tax and NZ Racing Board costs.

  10. Mardigrass, How many times do you expect the same money to be taxed? If NZTR receives money from the TAB distribution it has already been taxed.

On the TAB I'm looking at the Queensland partnering agreement. Its totally different but worth digesting. The gambling environment in Australia is also totally different to NZ. Ladbrokes don't have a monopoly.

Ladbrokes have committed to a seven-year deal to become the BRC’s primary wagering partner at both Eagle Farm and Doomben, where their revered ‘Ladbrokes’ Lounges’ will be in prime positions at both tracks.

Ladbrokes will also become naming rights sponsors for three Group 1 races from next year.
“We are thrilled Ladbrokes will become a major partner of the Brisbane Racing Club,” Ladbrokes CEO Dean Shannon said.
“The Eagle Farm and Doomben circuits are iconic venues, and we look forward to partnering with the BRC for at least the next seven years.
“To have our name on time-honoured features such as the Group 1 Ladbrokes Queensland Derby, Ladbrokes Doomben 10,000 and Ladbrokes J.J. Atkins is a genuine thrill for a company that lives and breathes racing on a daily basis.
