pete
I seem to remember him riding one of my favourites when a youngster. Giant mare Sailing Home by Dogger Bank out of Chocolate. Trained by Joyce Edgar-Jones. Interestingly the dam Chocolate was a twin and too small to race but produced this very large mare. She was a bloody beaut. I have a feeling Lester Piggott rode her in an International race at Te Rapa in the 70s but may be wrong on that one.

ngakonui grass
He only got the ride on Sailing Home because his late brother Noel showed loyalty to the Captain Jest team and suggested John to the trainer.
