I would hope they are not true. I believe the authorities should be concentrating on animal welfare and asking why the starter and his assistants did nothing to prevent the death of Mexicana last week. Can't have that at the races.

The anti-racing brigade certainly do not need any extra amo than they already have, that is for sure.

And when you say "authorities", I am assuming you don't just mean the RIU. I think MPI should be all over it, because it certainly wouldn't hurt for them (and their legislative powers) to have a wee look. And not just at this specific incident, but in general terms too.

Also on same thread posted about a Harness journo reporting on an alleged thing doing at the magic beach

    A "magic beach"?

    What beach would this be?

Sumner, New Brighton, Ninety mile, St Kilda?

    Somebeachsomewhere?

Does this magic beach start with "Wood" and end in "end"?

Why shouldn't Stipes believe these answers from the horse-people about Improved Performance ???

There is a difference between believing and suspecting. Like a lot of things, it comes down to evidence and also standard of proof. Don't get me wrong. I suspect the vast majority of horse people are telling the truth.

They (stipes) are NOT gunna say "What a lot of crap !! you must of done this and that (and be guessing) to 'Improve the horse.

They certainly won't say it in the stipes room with non-stipes present. But I can almost guarantee that what some think, and what they say are sometimes two different things.

The stipes report will be a novel for today's meeting.

    A novel indeed.

It seemed there were plenty of questions, or I should say, one question being asked on multiple occasions, regarding "improved performance."

What's the angle the stipes are coming from here? What are they thinking the answers may be, what do they expect the drivers/trainers to say?

But more importantly, there never seems to be any supplementary, or follow up questioning, and why ask the question at all? It appears it is just a box ticking exercise, as often the answers are fairly vague and disingenuous.

Here's a tip for the standard answer, and no further questions will be asked:

"Sir, I'm buggered if I know really, argh, been working well at home, tinkered around with the shoeing, and haven't had much luck recently. Oh and um, also went alrite here before."

Now I don't know if any of that response would be in relation to the horse or the driver/trainer, but it seems to stop the stipes from scratching the surface any deeper, and they just go on to the next person.

Bensons Mate has been nom-ed for Thursday Winton, so we shall get to see him in action again soon.

    Was an interesting run today.

Straight to the lead (uncontested), set own terms in front and got beaten by the horse in the trail.

  6. I should also add:

    1. The removable deafeners were not removed as the driver said he felt he had the field covered.

    2. The stipes questioned Cam Jones on the horses improved performance. He replied by saying the horse was unsuited on the tight turning track previously, and had drawn benefit on a larger track today.

    3. In my opinion based on that Winton run, Bensons Mate is either going straight to Open Class, and/or will be sold to Menangle very soon.

Cam Jones is surely the best horseman in NZ and simply leaves the All Stars barn in his wake with the way he can get a horse to run.

Forget Self Assured, South Coast Arden, Akuta, Sundees Son, Copy That and all those other trainers as Cam Jones is a miracle worker.

    54 Starts, 15 wins, 8 seconds, 2 thirds and a UDR of 0.3724.

Great stats, but exceptional for a rookie trainer.

When Bossmaro was for sale earlier this year, it was claimed that he was not well suited to shorter trips (eg. 1980m), or mobile starts; the most popular races in Canterbury. Bossmaro was sold and transferred to the Cam Jones stable. Bang. Bang. Bossmaro's first two starts for his new trainer, over the 1980m distance resulted in wins.

So Happy, you may be on the money! The best horseman in NZ and possibly a miracle worker.

    As for Bensons Mate...

If anyone hasn't seen the race from Winton, have a look and check it out.

  8. $100 multi (all top 3, except Self Assured to run top 2) to return: $718.89

    R3- 7 Cyris ($1.35)

    R4- 12 Regal Attire ($1.35)

    R6- 5 Shan Noble ($1.10)

    R7 - American Pride ($1.35)

    R9 - Muscle Mountain ($1.70)

    R10- Darling Me ($1.25)

    R11- Self Assured ($1.25)

  9. Which makes me think, who was the last horse to lead all the way, or pretty much all of the way in the trotting Cup?

Self Assured when pretty close to it last year. But has any horse just got to the front straight away and just stayed there to win?

Neil Brady. Whatever happened to him lol

Handing up to anything else in my opinion is TOO risky that they will hand again.

Or do the ole hand up to something that is dead set wanting the lead at all costs (more likely just wanting to find the marker pegs, than the actual lead), to then immediately go around that horse, and take the lead again. This scenario often plays out at the start of a race, my man B Orange is a master of it.
