Addington, being the only show in town for some, can go mobile only. Everyone else can keep the stands, especially the grass tracks. Maybe, HRNZ can tell Addington they are to get rid of stands.

The markets for some of the affected races have been open for a long time. Is it inappropriate to change the conditions surrounding the race due to this? I am sure the rules of the TAB have it covered to save their blushes but if someone had put 10 000 on Self Assured thinking it could draw 5 but instead it is going to the 20m mark I would not be too happy. Is this important?

Would he have won if was starting on 20m and gave the field another 50? I just think the NZ Cup is THE race and it is about crowning the elite horse for the year. They can do their PBD in The Race and drum up betting there but leave the Cup alone. Why did they do away with handicaps in the first place?

If they do it, I hope they do it now. Will help my longshot. But If HRNZ believe it is a necessary change for the betterment of racing, why do they announce it 14 weeks from the NZ Cup?

But off 20m in a New Zealand Cup is beyond any horse in my opinion. When I think about it, I believe HRNZ's motivation is to keep the up and comers in the country but I think they should leave the Auckland and New Zealand Cup alone. You are only enticing the R75 type horses into it.

The HRNZ board has unanimously voted that the New Zealand Trotting Cup, Auckland Trotting Cup, Dominion Trot, Rowe Cup and Invercargill Cup will no longer be free-for-alls. The Invercargill Cup? Has it been boosted up a lot in stakes etc or were they drunk when they did this?

With the talk of Copy That and Self Assured buggering off to OZ instead of the Cup, plus repelling the Aussies. What is the point? TAB have suspended the book because of this. Hope they go. My bets will be looking far better if they do.

The NZ Cup is purely about about finding the best horse in the land. The ultimate race. If that horse happens to be a previous winner of the race so be it. I don't see why they should be punished for being the best. 1. You can't win off 20m. The times they go now show that. The trail horse is capable of going 3.58(?) What do you have to do off 20m and loop the field at the same time? 2. The second line is bad enough, 10m is even worse and certainly not like the second line. The second line gives you a touch of hope setting midfield. 10m you see a wall. 3. I am not a super fan of the All Stars winning all the time but they usually have the best horse so they win. That is fair. 4. Do you really want to see an inferior horse win because they got the best run and others were handicapped out of it with impossible runs. 5. Punters will always bet on the NZ Cup. 6. The lead up races are handicapped I think. That gives the slightly second tier horses their chance to pick up a decent cheque. 7. More conflict of interests with Dunn being part of ATC and training Sundees. What will mark will Spankem be off? 8. If you want to even it up, have a PBD standing start. Mind you, if you start from 5-10 on the front line you have the best draw because starts are mess these days. This also shows the poor organisation of harness racing. HRNZ give a directive and Addington can oppose it? Surely, they don't have a choice. God, if clubs can oppose HRNZ rulings then bring back Waimate and Forbury!!

They don't open the large public area which leads out to the open air seating at Addington anymore. Just spectators which is overcrowded at times. No real locations for racegoers there anymore. The concept of a public stand is long gone, just as the concept of country tracks is going too. HRNZ will look back on their decision and regret it in years to come for want of a strategic plan beyond simply economics.

Put your yearly clothing budget on them. Go big.

Not that I know anything about employment law but wouldn't it have advice / guidelines on this sort of thing. Not sure how the racing minister can withhold funding from a legal point of view. Seems to be the way of the world these days, all emotion and little logic.
