ngakonui grass
George Simon mentioned to Pops on trackside on Wed that it was disappointing to have 2 big race days on the same Saturday. Pops replied that it was unavoidable. My answer....was it really.
Hesi
Are you referring to Matamata and Otaki?

Hesi
It has been that way for at least the last 10 years

Hesi
There are many scheduling issues in NZ racing that are not ideal, but there does not seem to be any overall controlling body to review the entire calendar. Especially important now that we are becoming more and more, a feeder for the booming Aus industry. For example, I fail to see the point of a G1 1600m 3 yo race in mid March, just as the Sydney Autumn carnival is kicking off, and after our Derby has been run
Hesi
It seems to me that our calendar is governed by 3 things, not necessarily in order of influence 1. NZ Bloodstock 2. The individual clubs, Ellerslie dicking around with the Boxing/NYD carnival 3. Anyone with money. Remember when that guy wanted to have the first G1 of the millennium, so put up a whole heap of cash, that saw the NYD Railway run for a million bucks
slam dunk
Far better to spread out the feature races and also not downplay them timed for race 9 or 10 when everyone wants to go home. Just having one iconic race is enough for marketing. There is still enough jockeys to go around. Can't see a problem with the programming of those two meetings last Saturday.
