Horse racing: Flogging tracks to survive.

Mainstream news media talking about it, that's good....sort of

Just rehashing, the intent of the Messara Report was to close 20 tracks, and sell the land and assets to fund the 190 mil needed to upgrade the tracks and facilities of the remaining 28 tracks.  That in itself will not save NZ racing, nor make it sustainable.  So it needs to go hand in hand with sustainable generation of money to fund stakemoney

If there is resistance to outsourcing, then FFS, streamline what we already have, so so much money is not sucked out and can be put back into the industry

Have a look at the last NZRB Annual Report, at net betting revenue and fixed/variable costs......and cringe

A brawl brewing methinks.

Sounds like Winnie has finally figured out that he can't legislate to thieve club and community assets for the purpose of temporarily sustaining an industry that cannot sustain itself and has no plans in place to make that happen. Handing over those assets to an outfit that has managed to develop the industry from one which essentially paid its own way 15 years ago to one that doesn't earn a red cent of its own anymore but relies on borrowing and stealing to fund its existence would not seem a good idea to any sane person IMO despite his pleas. Surely he can see that.

Surely a better approach with respect to the Messara Report, would have been to put the focus on getting a sustainable industry in place first, then focus on the rationalisation of venues.

As others have mentioned, with internet betting and TV coverage, people oncourse is always going to be a really hard ask, so why create so much angst within the racing community when there are other priorities, such as quality of fields so wagering increases.  The better tracks, is a nice to have, but only really applies to the 3 Winter months in NZ.  Okay we lose a few meetings in the other 9 months, but is it really of much impact
