I should have looked up the records for Rose Mellay, as I thought she was trained by Errol Skelton, but the result shows she was trained by Ray Wallace when she won the Cup.

In his obituary Skelton is mentioned as the trainer of Rose Mellay  in the AK Cup.

Also named as trainer in Bob Skeltons obituary.

NG & Robert, quite correct. I meant owned and wrote trained - duhh !

My records show Rose Mellay was trained by Errol Skelton, not Ray Wallace

You might be right but the results list on Wikipedia shows:

1974 Rose Mellay 49 4m Mellay (GB) Rosetti (NZ) Bob Skelton Ray Wallace, Takanini Mrs Maureen Madsen 3:17.6 Battle Heights 53 Valiant Warrior 49.5

It's simply wrong Curious. I can't imagine how Ray Wallace's name got involved. It was very much a Horowhenua/Wellington connection

Ray Wallace did train Classowa to win an Auckland Cup in 1951 so it could be a transcription error
