  1. Very good horse but very ordinary sire. His racing career ended in bizarre fashion. Cockney Rebel, ridden by Olivier Peslier, was a 25-1 chance for the 2000 Guineas (G1) at Newmarket in 2007, but beat Vital Equine, his Champagne Stakes (G2) conqueror, by a length and a half. He proved that there was no fluke about the result when he followed up in the Irish 2,000 Guineas (G1) at The Curragh three weeks later, in similarly impressive style. He only the second horse in the previous 15 years (and the sixth in racing history) to win both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas Classics. The last horse to achieve the double Guineas feat was Rock of Gibraltar – who ran a slower time than Cockney Rebel in both races. A very sharp miler, Cockney Rebel clocked the second fastest time (1:36.1) since modern timings began in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. He beat winners of nine Group One races, including the locally trained champion Duke Of Marmalade, in this classic. His time in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket was also excellent, as he stopped the clocks in 1:35.2, the best time in the historic classic since 1995. This time was over two seconds faster than the time superstar Frankel recorded in the same event in 2012. Sadly, Cockney Rebel suffered a pelvic injury when beaten as the even money favourite in the St James's Palace Stakes at Ascot and this proved to be his final race. He had been reported to be working well ahead of his planned reappearance but suffered a bizarre injury on the gallops when a piece of paper blew across the field and hit his near fore on the tendon. The news that it would take three months to heal prompted his connections to retire him.
  2. Song came out in 1975.
  3. Great song but Steve was also into horse racing and owned the top 3 year old Cockney Rebel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockney_Rebel_(horse)
  4. I can understand the lure of taking Puntura to the race but not the reality. After his failure 2 starts back they said he was going for a spell and then changed their minds. Similarly, Desert Lightning was probably on the way down after an incredible summer. I think it illustrates that you have to be on top of your game to even think about venturing over there for a big race.
  5. Interestingly positions 1 to 8 are on points as well as aggregates. Doesn't happen that often.
  6. Thanks Sharne. You were way too good for me but thankfully the rest of the team chipped in.
  7. Nice work Seagulls. Triple joker paid off for once.
  8. Some people should take a deep breath before they post.

  12. I know we've been through the pros and cons of bet365 ad nauseum on here but, personally, if the NZ TAB offered the same service I wouldn't see any reason to bet with 365. At the moment they don't.
  13. Contrast that with a job application form I saw from the ANZ. All the sections had the Maori name first. Just virtue signaling. I was somewhat bemused when we went overseas to note that my passport, being older, had English names first. Barb's newer passport was the other way around. Like you it's the sneaky way they do this stuff that really bugs me.
  14. You're right it was Faafoi.
  15. We'll keep it visible until next Monday. I don't want it cluttering things up any longer than that.
  16. It's still around I just hid it. I'll put it back for now but not forever.
  17. The 30 March Raceday, incorporating the G1 NZ Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes, will now be held by Auckland Thoroughbred Racing at Ellerslie, and not at Te Aroha. After an inspection of the Te Aroha track last Friday it was evident that the current issues with the Te Aroha track will not be remedied in time to hold this important raceday.
  18. Twas a joke. I'm in the 3 or 4 range.
  19. I rarely get up in the Dead Of Night.
