 Not quite right....Winston's notion, no doubt hammered in by the Waikato mob, was that 'lost racedays' cost the industry betting revenue.  A nice theory, but we know that isn't correct.

I don't think he would have got the millions gifted if the tracks were only for training.  He was misinformed, of course, but he isn't the only one.

Heaps still think that NZ racing 'makes' money out of betting.
