  1. The TV coverage maybe superior especially if the maze of dividends don't cover the horses however the information presented to the punter is a disgrace. For example when it comes to first starters all the public gets is how good the trainer stats are and perhaps a look at the breeding and oh yes they love to tell you if cheek pieces have been added. Yet it surprizes me that often the bookies get it right so they must have a network of sources. Its probably the same everywhere.. racing needs a major shake up with regard entertainment and information.
  2. You had like the way the owner Penny Chenery added to the hype. https://www.vabred.org/secretariats-owner-penny-chenery-passes-away-at-the-age-of-95/
  3. Many things wrong about the industry I agree. The club committee system an example where the local lawyers, professionals, biz owners without the slightest knowledge of racing would get on. All of it based on the "mates" system prevailing to this day. When was the last time someone from TAB or NZTR would contribute something to racing blogs. Takes an effort to get outside ones own bubble which the Wellington hangers-on aren't capable of doing.
  4. https://www.theoptimist.site/ Worth remembering Brian de Lore staked his reputation on Messara and the outsourcing of the TAB. His article however leaves out so many other dodgy factors. The whole process shrouded in secrecy, the blatant efforts to influence the minister e.g. Michael Guerin's TAB articles, the list is quite long. The Auditor General's view will be interesting.
  5. Believe it or not there are probably one or two TAB staff Entain may want to keep. However its highly unlikely they will have the other staff twiddling their thumbs for 2 years. I can see them working on other Entain overseas brands which are illegal in NZ or geo blocked.
  6. The current Foreign Affairs minister is the most pro colonial mouthpiece of all time. Any command for a statement from UK or USA is immediately actioned.
  7. Irresponsible publishing. Guerin's article should have been prefaced with the disclosure he is a TAB employee.
  8. Get off those Charlie Chaplin black and whites. Telling the long suffering owners their prize money is a government grant will really have them rollicking in the aisle.
  9. Rubbish, OK Winston Peters did away with the betting levy which is only now being realized. But to pay income tax on the amount deducted from bets would mean no gambling enterprise would be viable. I have no idea where you are coming from. If racing had to pay that tax then they could claim the cost that owners spend on training and selling the rights to use their product. In fact the income would always be in negative territory as the owners would charge a significant amount nowhere near covered by prize money. Before you go off spouting your "superior knowledge" do some thinking.
  10. Every bet is taxed. From wikipedia... although I'm not sure how the fixed odds betting is treated. The TAB offers a wide range of totalisator and fixed-odds betting products. Just over 80 percent of the totalisator betting dollar is returned to the customer. The rest is returned to the racing and sporting codes, after tax and NZ Racing Board costs.
  11. Mardigrass, How many times do you expect the same money to be taxed? If NZTR receives money from the TAB distribution it has already been taxed. On the TAB I'm looking at the Queensland partnering agreement. Its totally different but worth digesting. The gambling environment in Australia is also totally different to NZ. Ladbrokes don't have a monopoly. _________________________________________- Ladbrokes have committed to a seven-year deal to become the BRC’s primary wagering partner at both Eagle Farm and Doomben, where their revered ‘Ladbrokes’ Lounges’ will be in prime positions at both tracks. Ladbrokes will also become naming rights sponsors for three Group 1 races from next year. “We are thrilled Ladbrokes will become a major partner of the Brisbane Racing Club,” Ladbrokes CEO Dean Shannon said. “The Eagle Farm and Doomben circuits are iconic venues, and we look forward to partnering with the BRC for at least the next seven years. “To have our name on time-honoured features such as the Group 1 Ladbrokes Queensland Derby, Ladbrokes Doomben 10,000 and Ladbrokes J.J. Atkins is a genuine thrill for a company that lives and breathes racing on a daily basis.
  12. You contradict yourself. If there is tax relief that means racing is already paying far too much tax. What do you think the "Fair Tax" campaign was all about. Also given all legislative changes letting Lotto & casinos operate then racing has been negatively served. Total nonsense saying racing is being propped up.
  13. I'll take a guess. $40,000 fine.
  14. When I worked in a stable the trainer would mix the feed and tell the boys which horse to take it to. Plenty room for error e.g. the mixing, the audio communication, the actual horse given the feed. Seldom would the trainer see where the boys went. One would think Te Akau had a better system.
  15. Ladbrokes do it. So makes sense for them to steer the "customer list" that way. If the government bans advertising of unlicensed casino's I fail to see how Ladbrokes are going to comply.
  16. If you call participants taxpayers then yes they are sponsoring racing. But really where the idea comes that the taxpayer is paying for racing beats me. Its way too much the other way around.
  17. Racing pays far more in tax than the benefits it receives. Can't see where you are coming from.
  18. And what about Skycity? As Ladbrokes are heavily into online casino betting Skycity will have a competitor and Ladbrokes will expect the government to protect them.
  19. Maxi you make some good points. Trackside?? On Couse betting??? How are clubs going to interact whereby they put on races attracting betting and how are they going to be rewarded. Its clear they have done little research which explains the attempt to muzzle any discussion. Its all fairytale stuff.

    Nothing new?

What is a total monopoly? There is Trackside TV, on courses operations, agencies to consider. I can't see NZ giving away Trackside to overseas. With new technology (well over the last 20 years) any club can quickly set up and run their own betting. They can't setup and run all betting i.e. all other codes, sports etc. There has to be a breakup so if an overseas agency comes in they do only online gambling. Everything else stays with NZ.
  21. Gee .... thats out of left field. Urenui wouldn't be in Waikato I don't think.
  22. Affinity to some humans ---- got a big head.
  23. Given all the clues Matamata trained, Wanganui winner, approx. date range and distinctive photo probably Shane Dye riding why is this so hard. Got me stumped. The guy with hat probably dressed for September meeting.
  24. Far better to spread out the feature races and also not downplay them timed for race 9 or 10 when everyone wants to go home. Just having one iconic race is enough for marketing. There is still enough jockeys to go around. Can't see a problem with the programming of those two meetings last Saturday.
