Farewell to Melody Belle

Maximus

Recommended Posts

Max has never been a true worshipper of the Belle, she's never captured my imagination the way Sunline did (or Bonecrusher or Kiwi or Rough Habit or La Mer). But she has been head and shoulders better than everything else here in the last 4-5 years, including Avantage. The Ellerslie finale in March was a memorable ding-dong go!)

But I'd like to see her finish an illustrious career on a high note in Brissie and, in effect, give Max the finger! She has track conditions to suit and a couple of topliners to beat, including the reigning Cox Plate champion. Max's gut feeling is that she has had more than enoug and wants to be a mummy now. Go well, Belle!

Ran on okay for 5th, and beat home a couple of handy horses in Avilius and Sir Dragonet.

She has the record with 14 G1's, but surely can never be compared with a horse like Sunline.  Not so much a reflection on the horse, but a reflection on the sad state of G1 racing in NZ.

Maybe she will prove us all wrong and leave some great horses, recalling of course what an abject failure Sunline was as a broodmare

IMO you have as much chance of breeding a champion out of a broodmare bought on Gavelhouse for $500 as you would out of Melody Belle.

The big difference of course is that for 2/3 seasons you will be able to on sell the foals for heaps, even if she fails as a broodmare her foals will command a premium.

Depends who they mate her to. She has some very interesting tie ups with the dam side of Vespa IMHO on paper at least.

Vespa is a perfect example of a precocious 2yo early 3yo who was better than the rest here but didn't do any good against the Ozzie sprinters. I assume Mr Zhang is keen to produce a very fast 2yo from this mating. Max notes that WT's Stud Fee in 2021 is $165,000 - a big jump from $110,000 two years ago.
