Luxury Liner also an excellent Spring Champion (and racing in the famous Blue Spots of Roy Purdon) MM racing in the Kevin Williams blue spots 😁. Luxury Liner did win the NZ Cup and NZ FFA in the Spring . but not in the same year , a Bit like 'Camelot' did around that same era. The 'Liner' also won 2 Auckland Cups for Roy , but not a Miracle Mile. Not to be denied , the late Roy Purdon , the best there was until his son's took over also completed the clean sweep Quaddie in a season that Master Mood did years earlier ? , complete with the blue spots 😆 . so for today's Spring Champion. >>>>>>>>>>>>> 1/ Who is this great Spring Champion horse that also completed the 'Master Mood' Quaddie ? 2/ Who is the Handsome son-in-law getting the Job done for Roy ? Chokin had 5 starts for another Trainer (Hughes camp) before being a very high priced purchase for a Syndicate , who raced him in their own racing colours/silks , even after transferring him to Roy and Barry Purdon. He did win All those races though , including 2 Miracle Miles and 2 Auckland Cups. So the photo is indeed Tony, But he is with Yet another 'Roy Purdon Special Horse' that raced in the silver with Blue Spots famous Purdon colours. The syndicate if I remember (mostly Australians) decided against Trainers advice and started him as a three year old in the Miracle mile where he choked down and collapsed.
Lightning Blue
Robert on the money there with Christopher Vance winning the Big 4 races in the same season (like Master Mood did prior) CV in Roy Purdon's colours. In the capable hands of the icy Tony Herlihy. Today's Spring Champion seen here in photo, is in Roy's colours too, and was a real favourite of Roys (as he owned a share of him 😆) ......and looks like Roy will get a good result here too 💰, ( with this driving engagement of a Nz Harness racing champion like himself ) I missed seeing this one go as was a bit young but someone there might of been fortunate enough to see him race. 1/ Who is this Spring Champion ? and what is he about to do in photo in front of that big crowd ? 2/ Seems fitting Roy has engaged this astute pilot . who is he ? success seems a formality lol
Double R
Sole Command. P.T. Wolfenden. A bit of trivia to go with Sole Command, and would be a good quiz question. Who drove Sole Command at his first race day start. Answer, Maurice Holmes.

A bit of trivia to go with Sole Command, and would be a good quiz question. Who drove Sole Command at his first race day start. Answer, Maurice Holmes. Only the 15 wins from 80 odd starts for Sole Command . bit of a battler early in career. And yet won his richest race ( Auckland Cup and $50,000 ) right at the very end of his career . A grand Grand Finale !!💰 Three months earlier In the photo above , he is about to Win the New Zealand Cup . Trained by Roy Purdon MBE , driven by Peter Wolfenden MBE , and driven a treat in the trail after drawing the 1 Alley , behind pacemaker 'In Or Out' (driven by another New Zealand legend in *Derek Jones MNZM .) Wolfie extracted 'Sole Command' with aplomb, from the pocket on the home corner when 'In or Out' was stopping , and went on to claim the Great race Glory !!! *there's a photo of Derek earlier in this thread with Blossom Lady. Was a True personal pleasure to of been in Nz and seen those 3 guys , (now all sadly passed in recent years), with all the British Empire membership letters and Hall of Fame status , strut their stuff for a few years. Top shelf Harness men 🏆. (don't think there's been any Aussies good enough like those 3 to achieve any name 'letters' yet 😆)
Lightning Blue
For you galloping blokes , check out this picture at the 'Red Hots'. Never Ever see anything like this again....Even the stand is getting 'red hot'. 😂. Either someone's Steak was getting overcooked at the cafe , or there was a 'red hot tip' for the horse leading up the Nz Free-For-All here? and it looks like an MBE qualified driver too ? 😊 He was always 'burning up the track' so much so it looks like he is 'Burning up the Grandstand' as well !🔥🔥 While his rivals are failing to Fire ? 🤣 1/ Who is this Spring champion Blazing a trail to victory on this day? (and then all the way to America )

Interesting fact, he was introduced to the Beach Boys when in America. that is an interesting stat for his resume' 😊. I love the Beach Boys too. I play their (and also an Elvis) LP every week. Cardy also went on a famous American TV show when he cracked the Million dollars. The Ed Sullivan show >>>>>> and so was seen by millions of people. That above photo with the Fire is AMAZING . It was late in the day and the Group 1 Nz FFA was the last race on the card , and even though the fire had broke out in the public Grandstand , they decided to run the race anyway 😳. Cardigan Bay in the lead for Peter Wolfenden MBE with a lap to go . and winning too a lap later. Here's one photo after the finish of the race. You see some horses returning to the stable area weaving through the general public who have gone out onto the track to escape the smoke and that 😲. Extraodinary scenes !!
Globederby19
Actually, Cardy was beyond legend. In 1966 at age ten he swept the International Pace Series. Three races , The International Pace/Good time Pace/Nat Champ Pace. And he was barred from from betting because they guaranteed $1.10 back on the dollar invested so stood to lose a fortune. What other horse could do that ?. No other horse imho comes close to Cardy. And yet Alex Park wanted to pave over his grave.
Lightning Blue
The current Spring Champions have strutted their stuff recently at Addington . The Auckland Cup winner AKUTA surprisingly beaten into 2nd place in his first Spring run after Winter. but had to circle the field and sit outside leader last lap , ( like Lightning Blue would 😆) and grabbed late by the horse trailling the leader (Republican Party) with cozy trip. AKUTA is well on track for NZ Cup victory comfortably beating the rest. Todays horse is racing in the same colours as Akuta (What a Lucky Owner !!!! ) shares in Akuta and this one ? Double the Fun and Double the Wins !!! 1/ Who is this fantastic Spring Champion ? 2/ Who is his young driver who is doing a great job with steering him ?
