pete
4/5 lame after the win yesterday. It must be heartbreaking to have an unsound horse with so much ability.

Buller Rep
Wasn’t he (Clyde Conway) a master? Slam Dunk, you must be pretty old to remember him.
Hesi
Talking of the surname Conway, I'm sure this piece I found would bring back a few memories. On the first two days of the 1969 Wellington summer carnival Mayo Gold carried huge weights to win over six furlongs (1200m) and seven furlongs (1400m) before stepping up to 10 furlongs to add the New Zealand Oaks – despite her rider Bill Skelton being severely inconvenienced by a slipped saddle. The following month Mayo Gold downed the star older horse Game in the weight-for-age Jackson Stakes at Wanganui, and as a four-year-old she again illustrated her class by winning the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie in track record time. She was a brilliant horse. Trained by Ray Wallace at Takanini if I remember correctly.

curious
Was it Waiuk? or Waiuku? Think he won a few at the races there too didn't he? Sounds like you might have had an overnight sex change Pete. If so, congratulations. Edited January 29 by curious

He was also a very gifted racing journalist by all accounts. Smoke Ring completed the Great Northern Hurdles/Steeples double in 1965. She was part owned by a rather dodgy lawyer named David Hagar that my parents knew. Won the 1975 Oaks at Trentham.

LookingForValue
Clyde used to take cast offs from other stables and rehabilitate them by training them on the beach. He started the Waiheke Races after a 50 year hiatus as a fundraiser and followed up with the Karekare Races. https://goodmagazine.co.nz/race-day/

I belatedly realised that it could be misread. All good fun.

It was just the vernacular where it rolled off the tongue more easily.
