Happy Sunrise
Cam Jones is surely the best horseman in NZ and simply leaves the All Stars barn in his wake with the way he can get a horse to run. Forget Self Assured, South Coast Arden, Akuta, Sundees Son, Copy That and all those other trainers as Cam Jones is a miracle worker. Bensons Mate was incredible today. Taken on by a few nearly the whole journey but still pulled away to win by 7 lengths in a very fast time. After last week, it was a such turnaround. Well done, Cam. I thought Mitchell Kerr was the up and comer until his unfortunate issues so it would be great for harness if more horses went into this stable which would make the big races more competitive. 1

That is one strange progressive horse....... Beaten 10 lengths at Nelson a couple of times at beginning of year. then.... Then a couple of wins at Addington winning well in June, wonder why they didn't continue on racing then? , as was 2 outstanding runs and wins. (beat Suger Me) must be unsound at a guess?. (to have just a 2 run prep in June) good to see he is back in action again. seems to be a better one to follow than 'Crystal Daytom' for the punter?. pete
Guys I know you're passionate about this stuff and I'm not saying you're wrong but if you are going to infer some sort of cheating with a horse you'll need to come up with some concrete evidence. I think we were admiring the horses progress and I was impressed with the Winter wins . just wondering why he has such few starts this year. Thought he must have an issue because of the minimal races , but inferred nothing about cheating?. Benson's Mate could go on to pretty big things , won 3 of last 4 now. Forget Self Assured, South Coast Arden, Akuta, Sundees Son, Copy That and all those other trainers as Cam Jones is a miracle worker. 54 Starts, 15 wins, 8 seconds, 2 thirds and a UDR of 0.3724. Great stats, but exceptional for a rookie trainer. When Bossmaro was for sale earlier this year, it was claimed that he was not well suited to shorter trips (eg. 1980m), or mobile starts; the most popular races in Canterbury. Bossmaro was sold and transferred to the Cam Jones stable. Bang. Bang. Bossmaro's first two starts for his new trainer, over the 1980m distance resulted in wins. So Happy, you may be on the money! The best horseman in NZ and possibly a miracle worker. As for Bensons Mate... If anyone hasn't seen the race from Winton, have a look and check it out. Rusty
I should also add: 1. The removable deafeners were not removed as the driver said he felt he had the field covered. 2. The stipes questioned Cam Jones on the horses improved performance. He replied by saying the horse was unsuited on the tight turning track previously, and had drawn benefit on a larger track today. 3. In my opinion based on that Winton run, Bensons Mate is either going straight to Open Class, and/or will be sold to Menangle very soon.
karrotsishere
Im not inferring anything. Have not yet come to any concrete opinion either way. Need more information. BUT Here are some facts/stats from a quick look into profile have attached screen shots. Only bits of this is in brackets is opinion (That race win was quite something). (This horse looks to have ability - prob come from its dams as per record). Stripes report - performance was questioned BENSONS MATE - Driver B Williamson reported he did not activate the removable deafeners due to having the field covered. When questioned regarding the improved performance Trainer C Jones advised the gelding was unsuited to the tight turning track at its previous start and had drawn benefit from racing on a larger track today. (That race was quite something). Kamikazi driving for lead. Finally relented lead. Soon after popped back out to challenge for lead again. Re-takes lead. Soon after this number 5 comes up to challenge for lead. Withstands challenge, but is eyeballed by this horse until he finally loses this horse and the entire field including Santanna Mach who was nom-ed for the NZ CUP screen shot of noms attached. Margins 7 1/2 lengths, 3/4 length, 1 1/4 lengths Times MR: 1-57.3 Dam Telemecanique a Falcon Seelster mare won 15 from 56 2nd 9 times, 3rd 3 times. Won $180,615k. Bensons Mate out of A Rocknroll Dance. Trains at Woodend Beach - Age - Young Trainer as is a Junior Driver - This is his 1st season as a trainer. Next up took at look at Bossmaro as Rusty pointed this horse out. As per Gavel States he has not been worked since his last race 25 June. It also states horse is better suited to longer distance. 5 weeks & 3 days later. 1 Aug starts for new stable Jones for a 2nd - distance 2600metres R45-49 8 Aug next up wins for new stable Jones - distance 1920 metres R45-49 15 Aug 8th over 2600 Jnr R40-59 5 Sept wins 1980m R40-59 Took a look at 1 other horse Motor Mouth - Recall this horse as it was 1 of those ordered by stewards to scratch by Alford on 25 Feb 2021. Motor Mouth was with M Brown prior & races his last race for him on 7th Feb finishing 14th. 25 Feb Alford is caught by RIU He is then transferred to Jones. 22 Mar he races for C Jones runs 10th 28 Mar he wins for C Jones. Have not included the article with reference to Motor Mouth. Can if required. First year as a trainer UDR .3724 - Sits 13th on the top URD - BUT if you count only those that have had 50 starts or more he sits 4th place in behind Mark & Hayden, Mark & Nat, Hayden Cullen Edited November 14, 2021 by karrotsishere 1
Rusty
Thank you Karrots for correcting me, I was incorrect on the mobile starts issue for Bossmaro, but I wasn't too far off the mark. Just goes to show what a remarkable young trainer Cam Jones is. It's really positive.

So Cam has the same 'Grand-dad' (Derek Jones MMNZ) as Anthony Butt then. Anthony now based in Victoria, and has a great 'Strike-rate' as a trainer too, as well as being world top shelf driver. No wonder Cam is doing so well then. Blue-blood. Edited November 14, 2021 by Lightning Blue

Not so good at the driving caper. 173 drives for 15 wins and 24 placings. That said many a good trainer knows he's better placed in the stand that out in the middle. My feeling was the race was run to slow, and just got out finished by the horse in the trial. I would also add, it is not a criticism of the drive, as you always want to give the horse the easiest run you can, and sometimes it doesn't work out. Cheers.
