  1. Except that was nearly 6 years ago.
  2. Not that it makes much difference now, but I see de Lore is claiming differently. It’s obvious from that remark the Minister knows nothing about the history of the TAB and its beginnings. The thoroughbred and harness racing clubs of New Zealand put up £50,000 and a proposal to the Government in 1950 to financially support the clubs – no mention of the ‘sole wagering operator’ or ‘sport’ which never contributed to the set-up costs or shared in the TAB running expenses. He may be right but I wonder where he gets that from. Though he says that was to: "financially support the clubs", not for the setup of the TAB???
  3. It was set up by the government following a national referendum. The government funded the original board in a quid pro quo arrangement whereby the government got a 0.5% levy on turnover for 5 years to satisfy taxpayer resistance to that funding. It was not in anyway funded by the code Conferences as some revisionists like Acklin wrongly claim. Money to set the scheme up became a subject for argument, as many were strongly opposed to the use of Government funds. Finally, the Gaming Amendment Act of 1950 allowed the Board to receive 7½ per cent of all off-course-betting turnover accepted and placed on the totalisator. This is the same proportion as clubs receive on on-course turnover. Establishment and capital finance was provided by a levy of one-half per cent on totalisator-betting turnover for five years from 1 November 1950. The levy is now paid to racing and trotting clubs solely to maintain and replace public amenities and to improve racecourses. https://teara.govt.nz/en/1966/racing-horse/page-8
  4. The government hasn't opted out of anything nor sold anything. TABNZ has "sold" the operating rights for the TAB. It is a service contract between Entain and the TAB as the Minister said. Funds for distributions to sports and the codes will now come to the TAB from Entain under that agreement for however long it lasts. The TAB ownership (Government) and obligations to its objectives remain the same. The only change for the government is that there is at least hope of more longer term certainty about that with some guarantees which means the government is less likely to be called on for grants, subsidies or bailouts as they have in the past. If you don't believe that then ask Entain at the roadshow next week. I'm quite sure they are quite clear about what they own and don't own.
  5. Yes. And so far as I can see the taxpayer contribution potentially increases now. However the funds are generated, the taxpayer is not only gifting those funds to the racing industry but doing so free of tax and also now free of any betting duty. So, there is no return to government and with the proposed beefed up legislative changes to increase the monopoly protection, the taxpayer gift probably becomes greater doesn't it?
  6. As far as I can see, the taxpayer will continue to subsidise the industry as they have been won't they?
  7. Looks like they are shutting it down. Greyhounds first to go.
  8. Really? Compared to the direct tax on racing that the aussies pay?
  9. I didn't think TAB NZ was allowed to conduct online casino betting? That would take a legislative change wouldn't it?
  10. Hard to comment on this really until fuller details are released following ministerial approval. That said, I find it hard to believe that will happen as early as next week as some apparently have suggested. He surely will need to consult with participants, at least with the codes and recognised industry bodies in the first instance as well as seek advice from the DIA and possibly Treasury at a minimum within government? Seems to me that's more likely to take months than days.

    Nothing new?

I'd say that is inevitable. Even if a deal is made, any financial benefit will surely be further off than next season or later this one.

    Nothing new?

And if they or the Minister decide none of the proposals are acceptable, at least they can say they've gone through the motions and Xmas will still be some way off for the turkeys.

Yes. I don't watch it but that's because of the dreary content mainly, Guerin or not. Needs a competent guest interviewer to make it a little bit interesting imo and be more future focused rather than a rehash of stuff we already know and have seen. That's a producer issue.

Why do you think that? Or that people on here don't like Guerin?
  19. So, do aussie trained and raced horses do better financially on average than NZ ones? Where did you see that?
  20. Doesn't really matter does it? On average I'd say they all do about the same.
  21. I don't have the numbers but doubt the TA performance is any better or worse than anyone else who buys and races horses here?

20 years ago and things are different but Waller kept 20-30 in work here in partnership and that hasn't worked out too badly.
