yeah well at least he aint on strike ..

Max, I have a daughter who has been a primary school teacher for 20 years. If the bureaucracy would leave them to get on and teach we wouldn't be in this predicament . Forget the money side of it, the poor buggers have to be social welfare workers , have little back up in the overloaded classroom for mainstreamed special needs kids , disruptive kids etc, , have to back up in extracurricular activities , take sport , traffic monitoring before and after school, reports , marking assignments, and a massive amount of bureaucratic self analysis nonsense.

Our kids deserve a better system, so good on them. They are undervalued in my opinion.

The mark of a great Nation is in how it treats the Education of its people and the Health of its people.

This Nation is sadly lacking on both fronts.

I agree Rees, and unfortunately much of this is a hangover from Juan (John) Key (wonkey) for those that don't get the joke 🙂 , but I think we will get there.  Unfortunately covid got in the way of a lot of development (and spending) that I know was planned, so I think going forward we can hopefully see a lot more support and better mechanisms being put in place.

IMO all school sports should take place during school hours .

A lot of the problems stem from parents and by default the kids.

I don't know.. I used to play hockey on Saturday mornings at 7.30am .. and Cricket I used to play on Saturday afternoons..  Netball I also used to play but was deemed too aggressive ... hence my Hockey debut ..  😄  .. I hated the number of times the whistle went in Netball.. still do and can't stand watching it.. but not all teachers oversee sport.. and they have specialised teachers for physed during School hours  ..   sure the normal physical education classes are covered during school hours but rep sport for your school or region needs to be out of school hours as it should be as those competing in that are more dedicated towards using their own personal time.   Many schools allocate an afternoon for it and schools go off early.. ie.  Ham Boys..  Thursday afternoons finish at 2pm.

I am fortunate enough to have a 2.5 year old grand daughter, who lives on the same property( 2 separate houses).  I have watched the effort that her Mum and Dad(my son) put into raising her.  No formal learning but including stuff in their daily conversations with her that encourage her to learn.  She knows all the colours, can count to 10 etc etc

My role in life will be to teach her the times table, like I was taught.

What am I coming to.  So much is expected of teachers that the parents should be doing.

Why are they not doing it, one of 3 reasons.  Too lazy, too piss useless as parents or just too busy.

By the way, both my son and his partner work long hours and have busy lives, but they find the time to to spend quality, constructive time with their daughter

That's what it comes down to in some cases, prioritising the time, because you want to and because it's important to you.   I agree.. there are some parents that don't prioritise that time so any input into education won't change that, it's grass roots level in many cases, and some just don't do that and can't be bothered, but there are also some that want to do that but they themselves don't have that knowledge to do that for their children, however much they want to because they themselves didn't have that luxury and just aren't great at english, maths etc.     They are the families that I hope these new initiatives will assist.

Good stuff Hesi. With our youngsters we had a set of cards with the numbers 1_10 and about 20  with small words like it/the/is etc  and they knew them before starting school.Teacher said this gives them a huge start. Not difficult
