400m was on the first day . . . and I had nothing to do on the 2nd day.
So they asked me if I'd be the 'pace-maker' for the legendary John Walker when he attempted another sub-4 minute mile.
I was a 100m/200m sort of 400m runner, not a 800m/1500m sort of 400m runner . . . so I politely declined the offer on the basis that I'd more than likely bugger it up and be in the newspaper as the guy who stuffed John Walker's sub-4 minute mile attempt. 😀

and he ran it in just under 3:57

one of his 135 (?) sub four minute miles

amazing athlete

Try being a 50m/100m sort of 400m runner and you go to your older brother for advice on running your first 400m race…
”Just go hard as you can all the way” !
Suffice to say the last 50m of my first (and last) 400m race was not pretty! 😬

Have been to Hobart, though.
Won the Tasmanian Senior Mens 400m athletics championship title in 1983 as a visiting athlete from Auckland.
Stayed at the hotel where the casino is.
Nice place, but never went back. 🙂

I thought it was you Howie. I remember when you were the coordinator of the kids division for the Waitakere City athletics club. I used to parent help with some of the events on Tuesday club night.

Oh wow . . . between 1989 and 1999 !
Those were good days at the athletics club, Gordy.
I look back on them with much fondness.
What a small world it is, Gordy. 🙂

Big honour Howie. I was a 10,000m man myself. Met John many times and bought stuff off him when he had the tack shop in Takanini. Lovely chap

Absolutely, PJ. 🙂
I only ran against John once . . . I was in my mid-teens and we raced in a 400m at Mt Smart Stadium.
He even beat me at 400m ! . . . though he wouldn't have even been getting warmed up when he crossed the finish line.
A bit like Kiwi running in a Railway ! 😀

After you left the club struggled for a few years. Do you remember a 6 year old who used to win all his races by a big margin who later on played for the wallabies, one James O’Connor.

Max was slow as a wet week over 400m, 1500m, 10,000m and just started to warm uo at the 21,200m mark when the real race begins.

Hey Max, I know what you are tipping in the first comp race from Taupo tomorrow 😎

Oh yes indeed I do, Gordy. There were 3 O'Connor brothers in the Childrens Division at the time, and each of them won everything ! 🙂. They had come over from Australia and then before they finished Childrens Division they went back to live in Australia again. And as you say, a big career for James in the Wallabies.
