NPC Spring Super Comp - GRAND FINAL DAY - Sat Nov 11

GRAND FINAL DAY - Sat Nov 11

At last it arrives - the Grand Final Day - when all the final placings in the comp will be decided. Who will be Champions ? Who will secure the Wooden Spoon (somewhat unwillingly) ?

We begin with a couple of big fields thundering down the Riccarton chute then the Metropolitan Trophy, the dress rehearsal for the NZ Cup. Followed by a tricky restricted 2000m go which leads in to the day's NZ feature - the 51st 2000 Guineas where all the Spring 3yo stars face off.

Then we board the plane to Melbourne for the Flemington finale ( I gave the Parramatta swamp a miss for the GF). Mustang Valley takes on some handy old girls in the Matriarch before we launch into a triple header of Gr1 races where many competitors are well know to the Super Comp club. And then comes the day's climax: a Benchmark 80 where almost everything has winning credentials. The perfect type of race to end the comp and it will all be over in barely a minute as they charge 1100 down the Flemington straight !

Two of the top 4 in the Magnificent Seven meet when Heather and Zig clash in the Grand Final where Maurice and Our Maizcay with just 8 losses between them from 30 HTHs will also face off. The Turbos and Ferdies who finished 3rd and 4th in the Round Robin surprisingly meet in the GF however The Ferdies edged the Manawatu lads 3-2 in Round 1 and beat them 4-1 in Round 8. The 'Naki crew ARE the Turbos' bogey team but can they overcome that in the Grand Final ?

3rd place playoffs can be mundane affairs with hopes dashed the previous week but both the Magpies and Blues were confident of a Grand Final appearance last Friday and will now want to prove they should have been there. No one wants to be part of a team to lose two Finals matches. Feature clash could be the HTH between Roland and Richie who have both had some major tallies inflicted against them - more than $8700 combined - so they will look to inflict more pain on their HTH rival here. In Round 3 the Magpies audaciously launched a Triple Joker play against the Auks which saw them defeated but salvaging two bonus points (converting to 6) while in Round 10 the Magpies wrought their revenge with a 4-1 win highlighted by Roland destroying Richie who gets a chance for his own personal revenge here.

The Chiefs finished last and 23 points behind The Highlanders in the Round Robin but here they are not even having to fight out the Wooden Spoon battle as they meet in the Presidents Grand Final. The Lightning Blue vs Howie clash could see some fireworks in this one. Southerner Craig may also come up with some secret local oil in the first leg so Steve P will need to be at his best. The Chiefs played their Joker against the Otago lads in Round 6 but came unstuck in the last despite leading after 9 races but they got their revenge in Round 13 when their streak of improvement saw them defeat the Highlanders. One apiece but who wins the Presidents Final ?

Lastly the Wooden Spoon. In their wildest nightmares the redoubtable Swamp Foxes, any of whom are capable of big personal totals, could not have imagined a fortnight ago they would be in an "all-animal" dogfight to the death to avoid the dreaded Wooden Spoon. The Kauri Kats are the Jekyll and Hyde team of the comp but who knows which version will show up this week. The Kats triumphed in Round 1 despite a lower aggregate but fell victim to a successful Joker play by The Swampies in Round 8. At one a piece just who will be going home with the "piece of wood" they certainly don't want ?

Good luck everyone...

I gotta say I love the randomness of this comp. The dollars you score are down to your own skill or lack of it but you really have zero control over what is scored against you and yet despite expecting the $$ against to level out for most competitors after 15 HTH matches it makes the mind boggle how a competitor like Richie can have $4539 scored against him and yet BC, a mere $1935, less than half of Richie's $$ conceded. Sometimes your luck is in and other times it just goes all against you.

What is going on here ? Have been In line for a nice Wooden Spoon all season long,  and suddenly these 2 snatch it from my grasp at the death . ?  A disaster. 🙄

so instead Now it's a 'Silver Spoon' battle in the Penthouse with Howie the smooth wealthy Leader of the 'PJ Magnificent Seven' List  !

that's like getting a 'Fork' in the eye 🤕😄   Howie keen to add more Silverware 🥄

I know and most weeks I have made a profit and only $300 off top 6 but have only won a third of my games.
