So far we have 8 newbies(WELCOME), to the Draft Team comp.  Don't worry if you are the last pick in the draft, they invariably do well, whereas the first pick usually turns out to be a poison chalice

We need some people who have already entered to put their hands up for Captaincy. Currently we only have two (possibly 3 with Rex). I DO NOT want to Captain a team due to the workload I already have.

Max, Robert, Pete, Hesi, Rees, Ray, Richie, Craig - you guys are all experienced and capable....

As much as I have enjoyed being Captain of some eclectically named teams before  , Saturdays are going to be hectic for a while due to renovations and a trip into the backblocks in Feb where coverage will be nil for a while, necessitating early picks or numbers.

So I will gratefully decline an offer to Captain a team, - this time.

I will be in if you still need more people don't know anything about comp can I see rules etc

THE RULES

1. Players. Each team will consist of 5 players. If there are no selections posted by any of the Sub Selectors then your captain (or nominated person) may submit selections on behalf of the absent team member. In this instance their selections on behalf of the missing player must vary from their own to some degree.

2. Draw. The draw will match each team against another team every week until all teams have played each other over in a "one round" Round Robin format. At the conclusion of the Round Robin the team with the highest points tally will be the Summer Super Comp Champions. Aggregate will decide ranking for teams level on points.

3. Selections. Competitors are required to select two runners per race. No subs are to be posted. All selections should be posted at the same time although I may make allowances if this is not possible due to late arrival for posting. Posting the same numbers for each race is not permitted. I don't think your team mates would want you to do that anyway.

4. Scratching Rule. You may post replacements for any scratching by making a new post (on your own selection thread) clearly indicating your replacement selection(s). This may now be done any time up until 30 minutes before the first race which I will refer to as CLOSING TIME. If you have not posted by then your Captain (or other team member) will have 30 minutes to submit a replacement set of selections on the selection thread. Any scratchings that require subs can also be submitted by the Captains at that time. It would be very helpful if you are at all able, to please check your selections for scratchings, before closing time. Once we are 30 minutes away from the start of race one, the selection thread will be opened to allow everyone to view everyone else's selections and for Captains to have 30 minutes to post any subs, BBs  etc. After this point ALL selections are LOCKED IN. Late scratchings will go to the TAB sub followed by the 2nd favourite by TAB win odds in that order. If more than one horse meets the latter criteria then the replacement will be the horse with the higher number.

5. Investments. Each selection will be regarded as an imaginary $10 win bet while if both selections start, a $2 quinella combining the two selections will also be credited to the competitor. So that's a $22 investment per race per competitor if two tips are submitted. The races will usually be split 50/50 between NZ and Australia.

6. Best Bet. Each selector may choose one race in each country as a "best bet" selection. All $$$ earned from these races will be doubled. In the event of scratchings the same best bet (BB) will apply. There will be no transference to a subsequent race. If your best bet race is abandoned - bad luck !@

7. H-T-H. The draw will pit individual players from the two teams drawn to play each other, against each other in head-to-head competition. The player with the most $$$ at the conclusion of the round is the winner for his team. The team with 3 or more winners wins the match.

8. Countback. If a head-to-head contest is a tie on $$$ earned then a countback will determine the winner by award victory to the player who uniquely selected the highest placed horse in the final event. In other words if you both selected the same horse that cancels itself out. It would be the two selections which are different which will determine the tie-breaker. If the selections are the same for the final event then the same parameter will apply to the penultimate race and so on.

9. Points. Teams will be awarded points as follows:
3-2 win - 2 points
4-1 win - 3 points
5-0 win - 4 points

Bonus points
Team profit bonus - 1 point
Losing team with higher aggregate than their conquerors - 1 point

So a well performed side which still loses may earn as many points (2) as a side which wins narrowly .

10. Joker. Once during the Round Robin series, the team captain of each team may elect to play their "Joker". They must advise this in the post in which they make their selections. They may or may not confer with their team regarding this deployment. The Joker will double the final points tally for that team for that week. So it's possible to score 10 points (this has been done more than once) from a single round while it is also possible to play your Joker score 0 points and waste it completely.

11. The Jeopardy ChipThis is a new addition to the comp. Each team will possess one Jeopardy Chip for the duration of the comp. There is no guarantee they will get to use it or in fact no requirement for them to use it if they choose not to. This chip can only be played against a team ranked higher than your team at the commencement of that round with the exception of Round 1 when any team can play the Jeopardy Chip. This chip will-

Ensure a one point deduction from your opposing team's final points tally for that round if the opposing team fails to achieve a final aggregate for the Round of $1000 or more. The 1 point deduction will occur regardless of the points tally and will be irrespective of whether that team win or lose. If they score zero points and fail to achieve an aggregate of $1000 or more then they will score -1 point for that round.

You MAY NOT play the Jeopardy Chip in conjunction with your Joker. It would be wise therefore not to be announcing your play of either card before the selection thread is opened 30 minutes before the first race.  Like the Joker play, the Black Adder play must be advised by the Captain in his selection post.

12. Posting. Please post your selections by number (names are optional and unnecessary). If you post replacements for scratched horses then do so in a new post rather than edit your original. DO NOT POST SUBS IN BRACKETS WITH YOUR SELECTIONS.

Everyone, please note that the only rule change will be the dropping of The Black Adder and the inception of the Jeopardy Chip:

Howdy PJ,

I'll change my mind and be a Captain (if your Short)!

My Team will be called Mr Aybee , my favourite horse when I was a youngin.

In school holidays use to muck out his stable , feed him the odd extra carrot and even got my photo taken sitting on him a couple of times when trained by Tony Prendergast.

That is 43 entries with 5 or 6 captains so far

Looking like a 9 team comp, so 2 more needed

9 new players, so that will add new twists and flavour to the comp that we will all look forward to

PLEASE all remember

1.  Comps are played in good spirit and fun, the format is so unique and good that no one plays for a prize, just bragging rights, although Maxi might be convinced to arrange another token from Cambridge Stud again

2.  If, during the comp, anyone has something they are unhappy about, just politely ask, no sniping thanks

3.  Half the fun of these team comps, is the banter, so I would urge all people to contribute.  You won't match the essay and book like posts from Howie(Toofast and Maxi), but you can always try.  There has been disappointment over the years that the individual comps don't have the banter that the team ones have.  To be expected, people don't like blowing their own trumpet bit will happily wax lyrical about their team.  Isn't that right Howie?

JUST A NOTE also

The team comp format is set up in such a way, that you cannot see what your opponent is posting until Pete opens the thread 30 minutes before the first race.

TO POST YOUR PICKS, just click on the announcement that Pete will put up each Thursday, that takes you directly to the thread.  Page down until you get to a banner on the right, that says 'POST NEW TOPIC", and go for it

hmmm..no answer yet from Too Slow, must be either:

  • at a wellbeing retreat to get his mind right by Comp time, or:
  • writing his intro for the draft or
  • both of the above
