mardigras
17 minutes ago, Ashoka said: Globederby19. If weight doesn't matter, apprentice jockeys would not get rides and those behind the introduction of the wfa scale would have to be considered as having been deluded. Why would that be? Weight is about the only measure you have to try and equalise chance in horse racing. The WFA scale gives weight based on gender/age. It's generic as a means to equalise the pool of horses. So when trying to equalise a 3yo filly against a 6yo male, they get quite a few kilos to make up the difference of about 1 length in 'generic' ability difference. So they give a lot of weight to counter a very small difference in generic ability. I can really see how weight is making such a difference. I wouldn't say weight makes no difference. I'd say it is going to be difficult to say whether it makes any difference to a specific horse. Any difference would be animal specific. Good luck trying to calculate it. Apprentices get an allowance - that's to try and help them get experience, and to hopefully help them out by a small amount in a close finish. In the race in question, I have priced Star Of Bombay at 2.14 and Deerfield at 3.35. I don't consider weight in those prices which has Star Of Bombay about 50% greater chance of winning than Deerfield - about the same ratio that the NZ TAB has. mardigras
1 minute ago, Ashoka said: mardigras, "i wouldn't say weight makes no difference...". Then, we agree. I would say it makes negligible difference. Close to zero. As we just saw.
Maximus
Now while you lads were arguing the toss Deerfield has just kicked their asses. Weight may stop a train, and Deerfield may have no 'record' on good ground (no starts) but that doesnt mean he cant beat an average field on a Dead
