Sign of things to come, out & out champion Double Miracle Mile winner WESTBURN GRANT. and a 'triple' Australian Harness horse of the Year. A true Champion . Undefeated in 3 New Zealand career starts?. Would be the only Aussie to ever do that ! *no hang on just had to edit in as there was HALWES from Tassie in that AKLD Interdom. A great bloke named Jim Smith from Takanini, trained the 2nd horse in your video > Captain Lee. He was hanging in very badly , probably used to racing the other way round at Auckland all the time. (Inky Lord was hanging in too it seems, but they were tired chasing the champ many lengths behind ) Edited January 21, 2022 by Lightning Blue
Blackie
Vic Frost was hanging a bit as well, kept on looking for where they are, needed a rear vision mirror on his cart.
Lightning Blue
Here's a famous Aussie from nearly 100 years ago. The oldest on the thread. Walla Walla at his peak as a 9 year old winning 15 of 25 starts that year, as the champ PHAR LAP was winning at the gallops. That good they had a song and a 'Catch -Phrase ' for him . FURTHER BACK THAN 'WALLA WALLA' ........ the phrase used for decades in all sports to describe a competitor starting from a long way back from his rivals , running , cycling etc or just describing a far back location. He started off 288 yards once (2nd) and won at Harold park over a mile from 86yd handicap over a mile. and throughout his career giving rivals 100- 200 yard starts was common. you need binocs to look back for him lol... Here he is at Addington, Invited to take on the NZ champ HAROLD LOGAN (double 1931-32 Nz Cup winner) but after one win , Harold Logan beat up on Walla Walla as they toured around NZ another 4 times.
