WINTER SUPER DRAFT COMP

As voted for by the huddled masses the Draft Super Comp Returns for the Winter Sprint .

Yes, we are just 10 days away from kicking off the Winter Draft Super Comp. This will be starting Saturday week (Jul 2). The comp will run for just 9 weeks if we can get 10 teams of 5 competitors per team.

Same Super Comp Rules we are all familiar with. We would love to welcome some new faces aboard so please join us !

So we need two types of entrant:

Draft - means you go into the pool and will get drafted (selected) to play for a particular team.

Captain - not only will you be the team leader but you will be responsible for selecting the team of your own choosing.

The draft will happen the evening of Tuesday June 28 and will require just an hour of your time. If we end up with an odd number of teams there will be no actual byes. The team which would have had the bye that week will get to be the third leg of the head-to-head team clash of their choosing !

The most recent Draft Comp (Summer version) saw victory go to Off 'n' Gone - Ian, Ziggy, Rees, Stevie N & Secret Squirrel with Ray's Surf "n" Turf franchise of the four "Gs" - Geoff, Gospel of Judas, Graeme & Gee as runners-up. Tonkatime was an easy winner at the top of the Magnificent Seven. We hope all of these great competitors will return for another crack this time.

So please enter on this thread clearly stating whether you will be a Captain or just in the draft. We need Captains !

Any questions - please ask.

THE RULES

1. Players. Each team will consist of 5 players. If there are no selections posted by any of the Sub Selectors then your captain (or nominated person) may submit selections on behalf of the absent team member. In this instance their selections on behalf of the missing player must vary from their own to some degree.

2. Draw. The draw will match each team against another team every week until all teams have played each other over in a "one round" Round Robin format. At the conclusion of the Round Robin the team with the highest points tally will be the Summer Super Comp Champions. Aggregate will decide ranking for teams level on points.

3. Selections. Competitors are required to select two runners per race. No subs are to be posted. All selections should be posted at the same time although I may make allowances if this is not possible due to late arrival for posting. Posting the same numbers for each race is not permitted. I don't think your team mates would want you to do that anyway.

4. Scratching Rule. You may post replacements for any scratching by making a new post entirely (i.e. new thread) clearly indicating your replacement selection(s). This may now be done any time up until 1 HOUR before the first race which I will refer to as CLOSING TIME. If you have not posted by then your Captain (or other team member) will have 30 minutes to submit a replacement set of selections on the selection thread (in a new post/thread). Any scratchings that require subs can also be submitted by the Captains at that time. It would be very helpful if you are at all able, to please check your selections for scratchings, before closing time. Once we are 1 HOUR away from the start of race one, the selection thread will be opened to allow everyone to view everyone else's selections and for Captains to have 30 minutes to post any subs, BBs  etc. Selections cannot be changed at this point except in the event of scratchings or numbers posted that don't exist for that specific race. After this point - 30 minutes prior to race 1 - ALL selections are LOCKED IN. Late scratchings will go to the TAB sub followed by the 2nd favourite by TAB win odds in that order. If more than one horse meets the latter criteria then the replacement will be the horse with the higher number.

5. Investments. Each selection will be regarded as an imaginary $10 win bet while if both selections start, a $2 quinella combining the two selections will also be credited to the competitor. So that's a $22 investment per race per competitor if two tips are submitted. The races will usually be split 50/50 between NZ and Australia.

6. Best Bet. Each selector may choose one race in each country as a "best bet" selection. All $$$ earned from these races will be doubled. In the event of scratchings the same best bet (BB) will apply. There will be no transference to a subsequent race. If your best bet race is abandoned - bad luck !@

7. H-T-H. The draw will pit individual players from the two teams drawn to play each other, against each other in head-to-head competition. The player with the most $$$ at the conclusion of the round is the winner for his team. The team with 3 or more winners wins the match.

8. Countback. If a head-to-head contest is a tie on $$$ earned then a countback will determine the winner by award victory to the player who uniquely selected the highest placed horse in the final event. In other words if you both selected the same horse that cancels itself out. It would be the two selections which are different which will determine the tie-breaker. If the selections are the same for the final event then the same parameter will apply to the penultimate race and so on.

9. Points. Teams will be awarded points as follows:
3-2 win - 2 points
4-1 win - 3 points
5-0 win - 4 points

Bonus points
Team profit bonus - 1 point
Losing team with higher aggregate than their conquerors - 1 point

So a well performed side which still loses may earn as many points (2) as a side which wins narrowly .

10. Each week there will be a team having their bye, however it will not be a week off. Picks will need to be submitted as usual. The Captain of the "bye team" can choose which of the other 3 matches they choose for their team to compete in. There are no head-to-heads for the 'bye" team. They are simply pitting their aggregate against that of the other two sides.

If they beat one of the other teams' aggregate scores, they score one point. If they beat the aggregate of both teams they score two points. They are also eligible for a bonus point for a team profit. So the maximum they can score is 3 points. They can also choose to use a Joker in their Bye week if they choose. This should add some interest to the comp. Captains can canvass their team or go alone with their choice of clash. The Captain of the Bye team has until closing time on Saturday to announce who their opponents will be. You cannot play your Jeopardy chip on your BYE round.

11. Joker. Once during the Round Robin series, the team captain of each team may elect to play their "Joker". They must advise this in the post in which they make their selections. They may or may not confer with their team regarding this deployment. The Joker will double the final points tally for that team for that week. So it's possible to score 10 points (this has been done more than once) from a single round while it is also possible to play your Joker score 0 points and waste it completely.

12. The Jeopardy ChipThis is a new addition to the comp. Each team will possess one Jeopardy Chip for the duration of the comp. There is no guarantee they will get to use it or in fact no requirement for them to use it if they choose not to. This chip can only be played against a team ranked higher than your team at the commencement of that round with the exception of Round 1 when any team can play the Jeopardy Chip. This chip will-

Ensure a one point deduction from your opposing team's final points tally for that round if the opposing team fails to achieve a final aggregate for the Round of $1000 or more. The 1 point deduction will occur regardless of the points tally and will be irrespective of whether that team win or lose. If they score zero points and fail to achieve an aggregate of $1000 or more then they will score -1 point for that round.

You MAY NOT play the Jeopardy Chip in conjunction with your Joker. It would be wise therefore not to be announcing your play of either card before the selection thread is opened 30 minutes before the first race.  Like the Joker play, the Jeopardy Chip play must be advised by the Captain in his selection post.

13. Posting. Please post your selections by number (names are optional and unnecessary). If you post replacements for scratched horses then do so in a new post rather than edit your original. DO NOT POST SUBS IN BRACKETS WITH YOUR SELECTIONS.

I'm very keen to take part again, thanks.

After many, many, many years as a Captain I regret I am all Captained-out to be honest, and would look forward to the simplicity of being a draft player this time round.
Not to say I'd never put myself forward again to be a Captain, but I'm thinking a bit of a break is needed at this time.

Am hoping that others will leap forward to be a Captain, as in very recent years the finding of Captains seems to have become increasingly difficult.
For that reason I feel bad stepping down, but sometimes ya just gotta look after yourself.
